Catalog Description: This course emphasizes using and evaluating open source (OS) tools for educational purposes while familiarizing participants with a general history of OS software. This is a practical, project driven course where students will actively use open source operating systems, programs, and platforms as they learn how to quickly and accurately evaluate whether open source products meet their professional, district, and/or students' needs. Participants will leave with practical OS-software based classroom activities and strategies for using OS in their professional development. |
Course Goal and Objectives: At the end of the course, students will: ¿ understand basic Open Source (OS) history and philosophy ¿ be familiar with different OS & Creative Commons licenses ¿ know how to use software evaluation tools ¿ develop lesson plans using open source software ¿ use open source tools for improved professional development activity ¿ have experience working with OS tools |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course is required for the proposed Instructional Design certificate program in the MSEd Information Technology program. |

Brief Course outline: ¿ History and background of Open Source software and tools ¿ Hands-on experience with different OS operating systems such as Ubuntu ¿ Hands on experience working with OS tools: o Word processor o Image editor o Video editor ¿ Establish individual or organization¿s software requirements and needs o Create evaluation rubric to identify key elements ¿ Compare individual¿s software evaluation rubric to industry and organizational software evaluation rubrics ¿ Evaluate and compare OS and proprietary software in different categories: o Video editing o CMS o LMS o Word Processing o Presentation software (like PowerPoint) o Spreadsheets o Photo Editing o Mobile device platforms (Android vs MacOS) ¿ Use OS and proprietary software to complete tasks ¿ Evaluate and compare software and results ¿ Create a course and/or content related project using the OS tool ¿ Create or complete a professional development related activity using the OS tool |
