Catalog Description:
This course covers medical terminology, symbols and abbreviations, and the application of this language in the field of health care. While terms are covered as they relate to body structure and function, the main focus is on medical vocabulary and being able to construct terms using word parts such as roots, suffixes, and prefixes.
Course Goal and Objectives:
The goal of this course is to familiarize students with human body systems and associated medical terminology. By the end of this course students will be familiar with and able to: ¿ Recognize the meaning of medical word parts and define the medical terms. ¿ Accurately spell and pronounce medical terms ¿ Identify the structures and functions of the major human body systems. ¿ Describe common diseases, disorders and conditions; comprehend diagnostic terms; identify therapeutic procedures and interventions
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course is designed for students in a health care interpreter training program, pre-occupational therapy, pre-physical therapy, pre-nursing, pre-dental hygiene, medical assistants, healthcare support staff and others desiring a basic knowledge of medical terminology. Space in medical terminology courses being taught statewide are limited and often not easily available to WOU students. We have been sending our students to community colleges to take this course, which is required for many of the programs our graduates enter.

Faculty and facilities needed (4000 characters or less): ¿ This course could be taught face-to-face, hybrid, and online. ¿ Existing instruction design staff will be able to continue helping design this course which has been offered already through DEP. ¿ Beyond, the above help with online and hybrid course development, we don¿t anticipate needing additional faculty or facilities.
