Catalog Description: Training using stationary indoor cycling to develop cardio respiratory endurance and muscular fitness. Instructor guidance in warm up, steady up-tempo cadences, sprints, climbs, endurance trials, and cool-down using proper body alignment and movement mechanics. May be repeated for credit up to 6 credits. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Students will: a. perform combinations of indoor cycling skills, building techniques through a variety of activities lead by the instructor, such as speed /aerobic cycling, hovering, hill climbs, jumps and endurance trials using proper body alignment and movement mechanics. b. monitor their heart rates and pace themselves in order to sustain participation in aerobic conditioning which progressively increases in time and/or intensity over the duration of the term. c. perform resistance exercises on the bikes for a variety of muscle groups, using proper body alignment and proper mechanics. d. perform stretches for a variety of muscles, using proper body alignment, breathing patterns, and relaxation techniques. e. be able to discuss benefits from participating in a fitness program. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): We have been offering Indoor Cycling as a Special Topics course every term for the past two years. It provides a popular and appropriate lifetime activity course option for the LACC requirement. The class has filled (28) every term. |

Brief Course outline: Week #1 Introduction to course syllabus and discussion of course goals/objectives, activities, and requirements; instruction on safe and proper body alignment and movement techniques and principles, fitness components and principles, monitoring of one¿s heart rate, techniques of stress release; introduction to basic indoor cycling terms and positions, movements, strengthening exercises and stretches; personal goal setting for fitness, health, and wellness. Week #2 Development of basic combinations of an indoor cycling program; gradual increases in duration of cardio respiratory fitness activity; further development of strengthening exercises and stretching/relaxation techniques; emphasis on positive lifestyle behavior change related to fitness, health and wellness. Build bike computer knowledge. Weeks 3-10 Continuation of gradual increases in fitness/workload, including duration of warm up period, cardio respiratory fitness output (duration and intensity), muscle strengthening and stretching; increases in complexity and intensity of indoor cycling routines; further refinement of sound stretching and relaxation techniques; commitment to a regular exercise program will be encouraged; emphasis on the benefits of overall fitness. Students will be expected to know their bike computer `¿ranges¿¿ as they increase the challenges on the cycles. |
