Catalog Description: An introduction to sport climbing in an indoor climbing facility. Emphasis will be placed on safety, belay systems, climbing movement, training techniques, anchoring, repelling, and taking responsibility for a safe climbing community. Instruction will primarily consist of skill introduction, demonstration, and discussion followed by an hour or more of each class dedicated to practicing new techniques and challenging yourself. May be repeated for credit up to 6 credits. |
Course Goal and Objectives: By the end of the course you will be able to: ¿ Correctly tie figure 8 knots and safely belay a top roped climber ¿ Demonstrate competent knowledge and use of basic sport climbing gear ¿ Demonstrate knowledge of common climbing movements and descriptive terms ¿ Implement training techniques aligned with personal fitness and climbing goals ¿ Safely connect to a simple anchor and repel to the ground ¿ Monitor and maintain one¿s own safety and that of other climbers |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): We have been offering a section for Beginning Rock Climbing each term for the past two years. It is a popular and appropriate lifetime activity course that meets the LACC requirement. |
