Catalog Description:
An introduction to sport climbing in an indoor climbing facility. Emphasis will be placed on safety, belay systems, climbing movement, training techniques, anchoring, repelling, and taking responsibility for a safe climbing community. Instruction will primarily consist of skill introduction, demonstration, and discussion followed by an hour or more of each class dedicated to practicing new techniques and challenging yourself. May be repeated for credit up to 6 credits.
Course Goal and Objectives:
By the end of the course you will be able to: ¿ Correctly tie figure 8 knots and safely belay a top roped climber ¿ Demonstrate competent knowledge and use of basic sport climbing gear ¿ Demonstrate knowledge of common climbing movements and descriptive terms ¿ Implement training techniques aligned with personal fitness and climbing goals ¿ Safely connect to a simple anchor and repel to the ground ¿ Monitor and maintain one¿s own safety and that of other climbers
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
We have been offering a section for Beginning Rock Climbing each term for the past two years. It is a popular and appropriate lifetime activity course that meets the LACC requirement.

Week 1: Introduction and the basics of rock climbing ¿ Day 1 Syllabus and Waivers; begin belay skills class ¿ Day 2 Finish belay skills check; exploration climbing Week 2: Basic Movement and foot work ¿ Day 1 Balance and Weight Shifting; Toeing, Edging, and Smearing ¿ Day 2 Resting, Planning, and Breathing; Personal Goals for the term Week 3: Hands and Body positioning ¿ Day 1 Different kinds of holds ¿ Day 2 Hip-Twisting Week 4: Body positioning and conditioning ¿ Day 1 Muscle groups and Core strength ¿ Day 2 High-stepping and flexibility Week 5: Other types of climbing; Movement with corners and cracks; Dynamic movements ¿ Day 1 Presentation on other types of climbing ¿ Day 2 Stemming; Cracks and Lie-backs; Dynos Week 6: Focused climbing ¿ Day 1 How to ¿work a route¿ ¿ Day 2 Solving boulder problems Week 7: Connecting to the wall ¿ Day 1 Clipping into a bolt to rest (quickdraw & sling) vs. attaching safely to the wall ¿ Day 2 Anchoring, untying, and retying Week 8: Rappelling ¿ Day 1 Set-up, Hand and body position, from the ground up; Fireman¿s rappel ¿ Day 2 Rappelling with a safety friction hitch Week 9: Review of equipment, vocabulary, and skills ¿ Day 1 No Class: Memorial Day Holiday ¿ Day 2 Practice anchoring and rappelling Week 10: Creating a safe climbing community ¿ Day 1 Vigilance and Confidence ¿ Day 2 Final day of climbing
