Catalog Description: This interdisciplinary special topics course offers an introduction to contemporary lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues. It will examine the history, culture, social mobility, as well as institutionalized discrimination and eventual acceptance of civil equality. Readings, media and guest presenters from the national and regional LGBT movement will highlight diverse perspectives on liberty, visibility and acceptance. The course will cover issues of gender, sexuality, coming out, history religion/faith, queer/transgender diversity,intersectionality of identity, media, legal cases and rights. |
Course Goal and Objectives: 1)Explain proper use of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression related terms; 2)Identify examples of systematic oppression based on homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia and their respective implications for LGBTQ people; 3)Survey and understand LGBTQ studies in the U.S. and around the world; 4)Identify layers and intersectionalities of identity and oppression for members of a sexual minority group; 5)Acknowledge contributions of queer leaders and authors from different disciplines; 6)Provide critical analysis of issues raised in the course; 7)Include a wide range of questions, issues, and problems facing sexual minorities throughout the contemporary world. |
