Catalog Description:
MUS 380 addresses the many aspects and challenges encountered by musicians performing in the recording studio. Students will take part in actual recording sessions in order to directly experience the recording process, from pre-session preparation to basic tracking and overdubbing. Each participant will also develop an understanding of how to best prepare for upcoming recording sessions, as well as with the typical protocol of recording his/her specific instrument. Each class is comprised of a one-hour lecture followed by two hours of recording. The music recorded depends on the assortment of instrumentalists (or singers) enrolled in the course.
Course Goal and Objectives:
* understanding of the basic layout and operation of modern recording studios * understanding of basic recording session protocols * understanding of the different stages of recording (tracking, overdubbing, etc) * familiarity with various producers and session musicians * familiarity with specific microphones and other recording equipment * ability to prepare effectively for upcoming recording sessions
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This is one of the four courses that comprise the music department's Audio Production sequence. It was introduced last year under emergency course approval when Dr. Freymuth joined the full-time music faculty.

Brief Course outline:
Each class is comprised of a one-hour lecture followed by two hours of recording. Three songs will be recorded and mixed during the the term.
