Catalog Description: Introduction to Audio Production provides an overview of various facets of recording sound and music. Topics covered include the fundamentals of sound and acoustics, types of microphones, recording mediums, analog vs. digital audio, editing, mixing and mastering. The class meets in the music department's recording studio, offering students hands-on training in a modern recording facility. |
Course Goal and Objectives: - understanding of the physical properties of sound and acoustic - understanding of transduction - understanding of the main types of microphones and their applications - understanding of equalization and compression in recording - understanding of digital audio conversion (bit depth, sample rates) - understanding of primary digital audio file types (WAV, AIFF, MP3, AAC) - ability to perform basic recording tasks - ability to perform simple editing using digital audio - ability to mix and master simple multi-track projects |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The is one of the four courses that comprise the music department's Audio Production sequence. It was introduced last year under emergency course approval after Dr. Freymuth joined the full-time faculty. |
