HE 419 Internship in Health Promotion 4 -

To:
Course Prefix & Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
HE 419 Community Health Internship 8 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Com Hlth Internship

Current Course Description:
Provides health promotion students the opportunity to demonstrate current professional competencies and to enhance professional growth through integration of classroom theory with planned, supervised, and practical work experiences. Prerequisite: Community Health Education major, MTH 111, HE 227, BI 234, BI 235, BI 236, all with a grade of C- or better, and HE 471.

New Course Description:
Provides community health students the opportunity to demonstrate current professional competencies and to enhance professional growth through integration of classroom theory with planned, supervised, and practical work experiences. Prerequisite: Community Health Education major, HE 375, HE 385, HE 473, HE 487 and HE 471.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The original course title and description was written before our final degree name change was finalized as Community Health Education rather than Health Promotion. The term Community Health has replaced Health Promotion is both the course title and the course description. The credit hours for HE 419 was increased from 4cr to 8cr in keeping with national practice for expanded community-based internship experience. Prerequisite courses from the Community Health core were clarified by naming each individually.
Students/Program affected:
This change will affect Community Health Education majors in catalog year 2014 and beyond. The change does not increase total credit hours in the major as we no longer teach/require HE 499 (4)and those credits are being re-allocated to HE 419. Current students (catalog years 2009-2013)will use the expanded Internship credit hours (4cr) to substitute for HE 499.
