Group Work

Current Course Description:
Objective is to increase student knowledge of background, counseling theory, and processes in groups. Student will experience practical application of group theory and techniques by participating as a member for six group sessions. Prerequisite: consent of program coordinator.

New Course Description:
Rehabilitation counselors in diverse settings are increasingly called upon to use group procedures as a means for facilitating positive change in clients. The primary objective in this course is to increase student knowledge of background, theory and processes in groups. In addition, the student concurrently takes RC 630L to experience practical application of group theory and techniques by participating as a member in 10 hours of group sessions.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Counselor education programs typically require outside group counseling experiences for counselors-in-training. Historically RC 630 was a 3 credit class which included the experiential group experience. Changing RC 630 to 2 credits and adding a one credit lab (RC 630L) will allow a clear separation of experiences between class lecture and personal experience, and will assure a similar experience for all counselors-in-training.
Students/Program affected:
Students in the Rehabilitation Counselor Education program will take RC 630 (2 credits) and RC 630L (1 credit) concurrently for the same number of credits as previously required by RC 630.
