ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Current Course Description:
A study of the chemistry of carbon compounds including their structure, reactions and syntheses. Three lectures and one laboratory. Prerequisites: CH 223 or consent of instructor; for CH 335 a passing grade in CH 334 is required; for CH 336 a passing grade in CH 335 is required.

New Course Description:
Same

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Changing the organic chemistry sequence to bring it into alignment with other OUS institutions. Will take care of transfer issues. The only thing that is changing is the lab component, not the lecture. The lecture will be 3 hours each. See additional new course requests for the new organic labs Ch 337 and Ch 337. Note: these new labs so far have only been offered using temporary course requests. When combined with the two new organic lab courses (3 hours total), the total hours for a year of organic chemistry won't change.
Students/Program affected:
None

5 - Curriculum Committee Laurie Burton RejectedNovember 18 2009
Comments: The Curriculum Committee voted to recommend rejecting the CH 334, 335, 336, 337 and 338 package for two reasons:1) The connection between the CH 334, 335, 336 courses and the CH 337, 338 labs was not clear on the proposals. We recommend, for clarity in the catalog and for student understanding.a) The course description for CH 334, 335, 336 state the co-requisite requirements of CH 337 for CH 335 and CH 338 for CH 336. b) The course description for CH 337 states the co-requisite requirement of CH 335 c) The course description for CH 338 states the co-requisite requirement of CH 336.2) The catalog description for CH 338 was too vague, especially compared to CH 337. For a new course, for both student understanding and transfer of courses to and from WOU, the catalog description needs to be more precise. The language ¿using a range of laboratory techniques¿ was cited by committee members as not being sufficiently clear. Laurie BurtonCC Chair 2009.2010
