Current Course Description: Overview of contemporary theory, research, and issues related to language development. Topics include phonological, semantic, syntactic and morphological development, communicative competence and the underlying physiological and cognitive mechanisms of language acquisition. Prerequisites: Psy 201,and Psy 311.

New Course Description: Overview of contemporary theory, research, and issues related to language development. Topics include phonological, semantic, syntactic and morphological development, communicative competence and the underlying physiological and cognitive mechanisms of language acquisition. Prerequisites: Psy 201,and Psy 202 or equivalent. Psy 311 recommended.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): We have revised the course prerequisites to allow students who have completed the general psychology sequence (Psy 201 and 202) to be allowed to take the course. We have removed Psy 311 Developmental Psychology as a required prerequisite, because it is not necessary to complete Psy 311 to be successful in the course. This change will allow for more flexibility in student scheduling.

Students/Program affected: Psychology majors, psychology minors and any student completing coursework in psychology can choose to take this course as a psychology elective. This course is not a required course for the major or minor in psychology.
