Current Course Description:
The classification, behavior, life history and ecology of vertebrate animals, focusing primarily on amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Laboratory will emphasize identification and field studies of vertebrates that occur in Oregon. Three one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory. Prerequisites: Introductory biology sequence.

New Course Description:
The evolutionary history and classification, life history and ecology of vertebrate animals. Laboratory will emphasize identification and field studies of vertebrates that occur in Oregon. Three one-hour lectures and one three-hour laboratory. Prerequisites: BI 101, 102, and 103 or BI 211, 212, and 213 introductory sequence.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Given that half of vertebrate animals are fishes, the inclusion of this group of vertebrates in the course is appropriate and also allows for a more in depth examination of vertebrate evolutionary history. Students have indicated confusion about course prerequisites, so we have more explicitly stated that either the BI 100 or BI 200 sequence are course prerequisites.
Students/Program affected:
BI 317 is an Upper Division Biology elective that fulfills the field biology option in the Biology Core. In the current Biology program, it is also an elective option for several emphases, including the General Biology and a required course in the Zoology Emphasis. In the proposed Biology program revision, BI 317 would be an elective choice in all emphases.
