Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Human Dissection

Current Course Description:
A study of gross anatomy of the human body through the dissection of a cadaver. Pre-requisites: Upper-division standing and permission of instructor.

New Course Description:
A study of gross anatomy of the human body through the dissection of a cadaver. Pre-requisites: BI 334 with a grade of C or better, or consent of instructor.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
To give more students the opportunity to work on the human cadavers, the number of spots has risen slightly over the past several years with each student spending less time working on the cadaver than previous. Thus, 2 credits is a better fit now for this course. In addition, the recent development of an Advanced Human Anatomy and Physiology sequence better prepares students for subsequent dissection allowing for the pre-requisite to shift from only being ¿instructor permission¿ to including the successful completion of the first term (BI 334) of the advanced sequence as an option.
Students/Program affected:
BI 424 is an Upper Division Biology elective that fulfills the elective categories found in several biology major emphases. Also, this course can be used by individuals seeking a biology minor or as general credit for students seeking other degrees but have an interest in human anatomy (e.g., exercise science / community health).

Comments: Here is some additional explanation from Mike Lemaster. Rationale for Credit Change: To fully dissect a human cadaver takes approximately 240 hours of student work. BI 424 historically had an enrollment cap of 8 students which meant that each student spent approximately 60 hours per term in the laboratory dissecting the cadavers (2 cadavers at 240 hours each = 480 hours; 1 credit hour per 20 hours of dissection time). Due to demand for the course, we recently upped the enrollment cap to 12 students working on the two cadavers. As the cadaver number has not changed (still 480 hours of dissection work required), each student now spends on average 40 hours per term dissecting their portion of the cadavers; thus the shift from 3 credits to 2 credits (1 credit hour per 20 hours of dissection time).
