SPAN 321D Spanihs for Health Care Professionals 3 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Span Health Care
Catalog Description:
Students who are in medical fields will, in their professions and during preparation for these professions, often come in contact with Spanish‐speaking persons in medical situations. Because of cultural considerations and language barriers, miscommunication can occur, with possible serious and even life‐threatening consequences. There is a great need for medical personnel who can speak Spanish accurately, using correct medical terminology in Spanish; these medical personnel will need to interview patients and record their medical histories accurately and completely, as well as explain correctly, and in a culturally appropriate way, to this type of patient the medical tests and procedures needed, diagnosis made, treatment required, and prognosis of medical condition.
Course Goal and Objectives:
1. Development of knowledge of medical terminology in Spanish for anatomy and for the most common medical conditions and situations encountered in health care. As future healthcare providers, students will learn to use appropriate vocabulary to ask relevant questions of patients, to discuss common ailments, and to give simple advice. 2. Development of awareness of Hispanic cultural issues in the health professions. (¿Hispanic¿ is used here to refer to all Spanish‐speaking persons and culture, but with focus particularly on those of Latin American nations, from which the largest percentage of Spanish‐speaking immigrants to the U.S. comes.) Students will learn about common medical beliefs and use of home remedies to enable understanding and effective, culturally competent interaction with Spanish‐speaking patients.
