Current Course Description:
An introduction to the science of biology, including morphological, physiological and developmental aspects of living organisms; the phylogeny, evolution and ecology of both plants and animals. Designed for the biology major. Three lectures and one three hour laboratory period. Prerequisite: Passing grade in BI 211 required for admission to BI 212. Passing grade required in BI 212 for admission to BI 213. Offered in sequence during the academic year.

New Course Description:
An introduction to the science of biology, including morphological, physiological and developmental aspects of living organisms; the phylogeny, evolution and ecology of both plants and animals, and fundamental concepts of genetics and molecular biology. Designed for the biology major. Four hours lecture and one three hour laboratory period. Prerequisite: Passing grade in BI 211 required for admission to BI 212. Passing grade required in BI 212 for admission to BI 213. Offered in sequence during the academic year.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Increasing lecture contact hours in our introductory majors-level Biology sequence will address the following: 1. Accommodating Increased Biology Content: Instructors of this series have perennially struggled with the challenges posed by covering the ever burgeoning volume of information coming from the biological sciences (e.g., molecular biology, biotechnology). Furthermore, this sequence and these topics are critically important in preparing our pre-med students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). [please see Program Change Attachment #2B] 2. Student Difficulties with Content Amount: Survey data collected in fall, 2008 indicate that students struggle with the volume of information covered in each of the three courses and that an additional lecture hour will help them better cope with learning and understanding content. Furthermore, it is anticipated that increasing contact hours will have a positive impact on students¿ academic success in the entire sequence. [please see Program Change Attachment #2C] 3. OUS Institutions: A recent comparison of our program with other OUS institutions (e.g., University of Oregon, Portland State University, and Eastern Oregon University) has revealed differences between our introductory majors-level biology sequence (i.e., a Biology 200 sequence). Namely, that approximately half of all OUS members are offering four, rather than three, lecture hours per week. [please see Program Change Attachment #2D] 4. Increased lecture contact hours will also provide greater in-class opportunities for novel instructional approaches such as small group discussion, small group activities, in-class exercises/problem-solving, and/or peer instruction.
Students/Program affected:
Biology ¿ All emphases Biology Teacher Education Degree Chemistry Major: Forensic Chemistry Option - the entire Bi 200 sequence is an option for the ¿Limited Electives¿ component of this degree. However, the proposed change would not exceed the number of credits as the only other option includes the Bi 100 series which is currently at 5 credits per course. Earth Science Major ¿ the entire Bi 200 sequence is an option for this major that includes the Bi 100 sequence, and both the 200-level physics sequences. However, the proposed change would not exceed the number of credits of the other existing biology option as the Bi 100 series is currently at 5 credits per course. Earth Science: History of the Earth and Biosphere Minor ¿ Bi 211 is a required course for this minor. The proposed change would increase the total number of credits for this minor by one. Liberal Arts Core Curriculum: The credit hour change, from 4 to 5 credits for each course, will need to be reflected in the sequence¿s listing as an option under the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum (LACC) Laboratory Science requirement. It is important to note that this change will not raise the minimum number of credits for this requirement as several 12-credit sequences remain unchanged (e.g., CH 104-106, ES 201-203, PH 201-203, PH 211-213) in the LACC.
