Catalog Description: An introduction to the theory and practice of teaching literature at the secondary/early college level, including national and Oregon standards, constructing coherent units of literary study and assessments,and professional resources. Pre-req.: Eng 218 and one upper-division literature course. |
Course Goal and Objectives: ¿ Acquaint pre-service teachers at the college/secondary levels with the national and Oregon standards and Common Curriculum Goals that relate to literature instruction, helping them to design instruction that addresses multiple standards and meets the needs of the students ¿ Develop strong theoretical background knowledge on which to base literature instruction, primarily literary theory (a further exploration of reader-response theory in particular) but also pedagogical theory [however, this is not an Education course, and students will not meet with the full range of pedagogical methods that they will in such a course] ¿ Provide practice with a variety of unit-construction options, from initial pre-reading ideas through final projects for summative assessment ¿ Briefly introduce students to excellent young adult literature, and provide a short bibliography to build future reading selections on ¿ Introduce students to journals in the field at their teaching level that can advance professional development, and provide a beginners¿ annotated bibliography of sources to draw on ¿ Provide a venue for students to explore, exchange ideas, and build toward a professional collaborative development of literature instruction, creating a base for students to build a professional identity |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course parallels the Teaching Writing course that our department offers; the course will be relevant for students planning to teach at the secondary school or early college level. |
