Current Course Description: Introduction to the major concepts and principles of evolutionary biology with an emphasis on the sources of variation, mechanisms of evolution, phylogenetics and the evolution of the human lineage. Three hours lecture plus one two-hour laboratory period. Prerequisite: BI 311 or consent of instructor ¿ offered winter term.

New Course Description: Introduction to the major concepts and principles of evolutionary biology with an emphasis on the sources of variation, mechanisms of evolution, phylogenetics and the evolution of the human lineage. Three hours lecture plus one hour discussion section. Prerequisite: BI 314 or consent of instructor ¿ offered spring term.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This 4 credit hour course, currently 3 hours lecture and 2 hours laboratory, will be changed to 3 hours lecture plus one hour of discussion. The laboratory, where empirical approaches to studying evolution are stressed, will be replaced with a discussion session that focuses on the application of empirical data. This change, reducing FTE by 2 contact hours based on current scheduling, is feasible as a consequence of recent smart-room and laboratory technology upgrades. This course will also be moved from winter to spring term in order to better accommodate scheduling changes in the Organic Chemistry sequence. In addition, this course requires Introductory Genetics as a prerequisite, so a course number change from Bi 311 to Bi 314 is necessary.

Students/Program affected: Biology ¿ All Emphases; Biology Teacher Education Degree; Earth Science: History of the Earth and Biosphere Minor ¿ Bi 312 is a required course for this minor. The only impact this change will have is a renumbering of the course.
