R204 | Introduction to the World's Religions: Western | 3 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) Intro.: Western |
Current Course Description: An introduction to the major religions of the West: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. |
New Course Description: An introduction to the major religions of the West: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Zoroastrianism. This course is comparative and taught from a broad historical and sociological perspective, and does not endorse any particular faith tradition. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Clarification of the comparative and non-doctrinaire nature of religious studies courses as taught in liberal arts universities. The new language replaces the church/state separation language removed from the catalog for legal reasons. It is offered not only to give students a clearer understanding of the nature of the course, but also to help guide and justify course substitution decisions. (The inclusion of "Zoroastrianism" reflects the comparative nature of the course, as well as its content.) |
