Catalog Description:
Throughout the course, students will be exploring a variety of communication strategies that can contribute to their skill set as ASL/English interpreters and Support Service Providers working with the Deaf-Blind community. Students will incorporate these strategies and personalize them depending on the individuals with whom they are working. Further analysis, examination, and awareness will focus on the cultural and sociological implications of this marginalized population.
Course Goal and Objectives:
The students will demonstrate: - knowledge of the impact of deaf-blindness on an individual¿s overall development (i.e., social, emotional, cognitive). - knowledge of the major etiologies of deaf-blindness, their onset and progression and educational implications. - knowledge of the receptive and expressive array of language and communication skills. - knowledge of the diverse communication styles and modes Deaf-Blind people use (e.g., visual, tactile, tracking, signing in a restricted field of vision, projecting) etc. ¿ Work as a Support Service Provider and/or interpreter for Deaf-Blind people. - Appreciate and respect the unique challenges and lives of multi-dimensional Deaf-Blind people. - Lead and present activities among your peers.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course was successfully offered as a Seminar course in Winter 2009 and will be offered again in Winter 2010. This course serves as a prerequisite for a service-learning project working with Deaf-Blind adults during the summer and may serve as an elective for the ASL/English Interpreting major, as well as the ASL Studies program.
Faculty and facilities needed:
A room that is close in proximity to library and University Center for in class simulations.

This new proposal C00442, INT470/570 includes reference to graduate work in the syllabus (the previous syllabus for C00324, INT470 did not) which must be approved by the Graduate Committee. The 400 level of this course: C00442, INT470/570is is now reapproved at the CC level (2/21/10).
