Catalog Description:
A detailed study of the linguistic sub-systems of English (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics/pragmatics) as they directly relate to the background knowledge and skills required for effective elementary teaching. Topics include: language standards and dialect variation, cueing systems in reading, vocabulary development, writing conventions and personal voice, bilingual and second language development. (Prerequisite: Ling 210)
Course Goal and Objectives:
Be able to distinguish between prescriptive and descriptive approaches to language standards and usage issues. Be able to identify characteristics of linguistic sub-systems (phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics/pragmatics) as they directly relate to language and literacy development, classroom assessments, the evaluation of materials, etc. Be able to identify hierarchical structures and functional relationships in phrases, clauses and sentences as they relate to language and literacy development, reading and writing assessments. Be able to describe the interplay between linguistic and socio-cultural dimensions of language and discourse as they relate to language and literacy in the elementary classroom.
