To:
Course Prefix & Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
FR 300 French Table 1 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
French Table

Current Course Description:
Conversation practice in the French language; emphasis on everyday use of language and current events. Can be repeated; a maximum of three credits can apply to the French minor. Pre-requisite: FR 103 or higher.

New Course Description:
Conversation practice in the French language, designed for intermediate-advanced students. Emphasis on fluent conversation, giving one¿s opinion, and discussing current events. Can be repeated; a maximum of three credits can apply to the French minor. Pre-requisite: FR 202 or higher. P/NC only.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
We are dividing the conversation course into a higher-level (this one) and a lower-level one, which will suit the students¿ fluency level more accurately. The division into two courses was piloted in 2009-10 on a temporary basis and worked very well.
Students/Program affected:
Students taking French, French minors.

6 - Faculty Senate Katherine Schmidt ApprovedApril 22 2010
7 - Dean Stephen Scheck ApprovedApril 24 2010
Comments: Topic for future conversation: the course description notes the limit of 3 repetitions that can count toward the minor. I assume the university-wide limit of 12 credits would apply to a student who entered WOU with 300-level French language skills and enrolled in this 3X/yr for four years? Unlikely to happen, but wouldn't wish to permit more than 12, ever.
8 - Provost Kent Neely ApprovedApril 25 2010
Comments: The proposal does not indicate whether there is an impact on resources (i.e., new faculty). I approve the course with the provision that existing facutly will be sufficient to deliver the course. Kent Neely
