Catalog Description: Overview of contemporary theory, research, and issues related to language development. Topics include phonological, semantic, syntactic and morphological development, communicative competence and the underlying physiological and cognitive mechanisms of language acquisition. Prerequisites: Psy 201 and Psy 311 |
Course Goal and Objectives: Students will understand, differentiate and apply language development concepts. Students will critically evaluate, integrate, and apply theory and current research. Students will observe and identify aspects of phonological, semantic, syntactic and morphological development. Students will observe and identify aspects of communicative competence including pragmatic, discourse, and sociolinguistic development. Students will develop critical thinking, scientific writing and presentation skills. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Adding this course brings the WOU Psychology curriculum in line with current offerings at other institutions (e.g., University of Oregon and Oregon State). This course has been successfully offered as a Psy 407 in the past and enrollment merits adding the class to the permanent offerings within the Psychology division. |
