Current Course Description:
Study of sight singing, ear training and temporal acuity products. Co-requisite: must be taken concurrently with MUS 211, 212, 213. ### Development of ear training, signing and keyboard skills relating to musicianship studies. Taken concurrently with MUS 311, 312, 313.

New Course Description:
Development of abilities to sing notated melodies and execute notated rhythms; to notate melodies, rhythms and harmonies presented aurally; and to recognize basic musical forms based on listening and score analysis.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
There are two changes represented here: First, Aural Skills is being decoupled from Theory. Second, Aural Skills is being changed from 9 credits over two years to 9 credits over 3 years. As for the first change: AS has drifted over the years from its original function as a kind of "lab" for Theory, to a more rigorous piece of the curriculum with its own agenda, which is only loosely -- and not necessarily -- tied to topics covered in Theory. Students can succeed in one without succeeding (or even being enrolled) in the other. As for the second change: The skills expected of students are best developed over the course of an extended period. Indeed, it's not uncommon for students to fail in the first year and retake it the second year, with much greater success. This 3-year model will afford students greater time to practice and assimilate, resulting (we predict) in a greater rate of success in the first year, and a higher level of accomplishment for the same number of credit hours. A further advantage of these two changes is that students will have more flexibility in their schedules, freeing up three credits in the first year for music majors, and allowing them to take Theory and AS separately or together, to accommodate their schedules and, more importantly, their abilities.
Students/Program affected:
All music majors and minors
