Catalog Description: This course is the third in the Criminal Justice GIS sequence and will focus on specific applications for GIS in data-led policing. Students will use two software applications ArcGIS and CrimeStat III to analyze and visualize core theories in criminology. The class will use GIS to examine early theories of: Social Disorganization, Broken Windows, Environmental Criminology, and geographic profiling. The course will also focus on statistical approaches for crime analysis using GIS i.e hot spot analysis, kernel density estimation, distance analysis and spatial distribution. (Prerequisite CJ-341) |
Course Goal and Objectives: Students will learn to systematically analyze data pertaining to police services and criminal activity to: 1) Identify trends and patterns. 2) Inform tactical and strategic operations. 3) Participate in problem solving for community policing programs. 4) Assess planned interventions involving crime and criminality. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course is the third in a series of four courses that support the new Crime Analysis Certificate. |

Brief Course outline: This course is designed as a hybrid lecture and laboratory class. We will meet face to face for 2 hours each week. The remaining course work - 2 hours plus the time needed to complete assignments - will be done outside of class. Expect to spend at least 6 hours a week out side of class to complete the assignments. You will be provided with a copy of the ArcEditor the GIS software used in the class and you will have access to the GIS lab on campus. |
