MTH 341 | Linear Algebra I | 4 - 0 |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) Linear Algebra I |
Current Course Description: Vector algebra and geometry of 3-space, systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, real vector spaces, determinants, linear transformations. Prerequisite: concurrent enrollment in MTH 254; recommended: MTH 280 |
New Course Description: Vector algebra and geometry of 3-space, systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, real vector spaces, determinants, linear transformations. Prerequisite: MTH 252 with grade of C- or better |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The department found that there is not significant overlap between MTH 254 and MTH 341. In particular, the required knowledge for MTH 341 does not require knowledge of multi-variable calculus. It requires the mathematical maturity and knowledge of MTH 252. The amount of proofs is minimal in MTH 341, so we do not feel that MTH 280 is necessary (or even recommended) for students. Although it can't hurt to keep the recommendation, we no longer felt it was appropriate, as it may scare students off from taking the class (who were otherwise ready). |
Students/Program affected: Students pursuing a mathematics major, applied mathematics major, mathematics education major, computer science major, computer science - mathematics major, and mathematics minor. |
