remoted in and changed the harddisk turn off
settings...  called and left him a message that it
was taken care of and to call if he has further
problems

This happens about once a week. He said the power
light goes from green to orange and he thinks it
may be going into "hibernate mode". Maybe check
the power conservation settings and make sure the
hard disk isn't set to shut off.
