I hope I can answer some of your questions about 
setting up vacation messages with this email. 
Number of days between responses.  If someone 
emails you repeatedly, say every day or several 
times a day you can choose to send them a 
vacation message only once a day or every three 
days instead of responding to every eamil. 
List serve subscribers - It is sugggested by 
list serve users that you set your messages to 
digest so that you are only rec'ing one message 
a day and then will send out only one vacation 
message in response.  However, many list serves 
do recognize automatic messages like your 
vacation notification and deal with them on 
their end.  How they deal with them is peculiar 
to the list serve.
