When he goes to print it asks him to save it 
first. What he is trying to print is already 
saved but he cannot print it out.

I set up the printer on his machine and ran some
test prints. Everything looked fine, but he did
show me some print outs that showed smudging and
streaking on the left hand side of the page. This
seems to be an intermittent problem. I'm going to
recomend they change the toner and see if the
problem is resolved. The printer is fairly old
though and may just be on its last legs. the model
is discontinued by HP.

The left hand column of what is being printed is 
not coming out very clearly either he said.
