So, the soundcard was laying on the bottom of the
case. I opened the side panel and there it was.
Just sitting there. I plugged it in, screwed it
down, rebooted. Sound works fine. Closing ticket.

Driver install didn't solve the problem. We need
to order the replacement motherboard if we want
sound to work.

Found a driver that may work. I'm going to try to
install that before I try the thumb drive
technique. Called and left vm asking if she'd be
in this afternoon for me to come by and try it.

Going to boot off of a thumb drive and see if
sound is working that way. If not then it's most
likely a hardware problem.

Tried downloading the soundcard drivers for the
4600 from Dell's website. Every install stated
that there was no mixer device for .

I went into the BIOS and the onboard sound was set
to "OFF". Thinking that I'd found the problem I
rebooted after setting it to "ON". Still no sound
and the driver install files still didn't detect a
mixer device.

According to our inventory this machine is in
warranty until the end of May. We may want to
order a replacement motherboard to fix the problem.

The only other thing I could think of is to bring
the machine back and Ghost it just to be
absolutely certain it wasn't a software problem.

I'm going to ask Joe which he'd rather we do.

No audio device detected at all. Legacy drivers
etc are listed in Device Manager but no sound
devices. Volume control says there's no sound
device installed. Windows updates shows no sound
card updates or anything of that sort.

Tried doing the svchost fixes on the off chance
this was another case where the sound controller's
not loading because svchost is hogging all the
memory. Didn't solve the problem.

Someone needs to actually go take a look at the
machine or pick it up and bring it back to look at
it. Something's not being detected properly.
