Was because the speakers were sitting right next
to the monitor. I moved them away from it and
turned the monitor off for a minute and the
"rainbowness" was gone.

It is a CRT monitor so most likely it has to do
with its proximity to something magnetics...

The monitor is beginning to display some 
rainbowness around the edges and is getting worse.
