After much tribulation the Mac is back in action
and ready for work! It's fix't.

Repaired permissions and that went fine.

Combo updater wouldn't install properly. On reboot
the machine would hang.

We need to shut down the mac, then hold down
ctrl-option-c and follow instructions to run the
equivalent of chkdsk.

Mail, Firefox, Safari, and various other 
applications "quit unexpectedly" intermittantly. 
Excel does not open files. User is only available 
in the next 45 minutes and will not be here 
Friday. The department secretary can let techs 
in. He says he's been having problems ever since 
Mac OSX was updated.
