told her to enter only thompsk. This worked and
she told me I could close the task. She will call

Hi Kathy,

Below is some info on what we were talking about
on the phone this afternoon. Maybe it can help
you with your trouble logging into the terminal
server. I got it from:
http://www.wou.edu/ucs/faq/remotedesktop.php

I still have your Service Request number 23600
open and made a memo that you still needed help
because it still was not connecting for you.
Maybe this info can help until a tech is able to
get in touch with you.

OK, I've got the remote computer set up on campus
(or I'm using the terminal server), so what do I
do to connect to it from home?

[Shown in email is all the info online under this
header]

I just get an error that says I can't connect!
How do I make it work?

Still not able to get into remote desktop. Not
letting her in.

Ways she is going about connecting:
1) ts.wou.edu/thompsk
2) all programs > accessories > all programs >

Then:
enters name and pass and she gets the grey
screen. She gets error that username name and
pass are not correct... She mentions something
about "this computer" and mash and she doesn't
have the right options chosen. It's difficult to
follow her even when asking leading questions and
asking for clarification. In person help may be
most efficient?

Just to give you a heads up in the case you don't
get your voice mail, we have placed a new network

Myron was working with her on Friday and said
that "her network card blew up." He was already
after hours and had to leave.

Friday she was able to get to her flash and work.
Now frozen on "Preparing network connections..."
THen was able to get into her machine. FF
woudn't load pages. Is going to try IE but can't
find it on her machine. Cannot connect to H.
Cannot work.

I told her Myron was out today and that's why he
likely hadn't heard from anyone. Then she
mentioned her call noted in last memo. I told her
I would reassign it to ucs tech instead of Myron
so that if a different tech could get to it, they
would. She said she felt like she was forgotten.

I got the Windows Security Alert: Your computer

software. It came up as the little yellow sign

just ignored it and it went away. If someone tells
me how, I would be glad to run the scans and check
them myself. Thanks again for helping me,

After doing all of these things I was able to
access WOU email at http://www.wou.edu/newmail and
the Banner SIS login screen. I did not receive any
further errors, pop-ups, or issues with IExplorer.
The virus warnings you were getting were spyware
pop-ups and not legitimate virus warnings.

If you have any more issues please call us at
503-838-8925 and reference your service request
number 23600 or email me back.

Have a nice break,

Hi Kathryn,

I came by to have a look at your machine. Thank
you for the notes. I installed, reinstalled, and
removed somethings to get your machine back into
working order. Here is a brief rundown of what I did:

1. Removed Google toolbar; many people end up with
toolbars unintentionally. Toolbars can be gateways
for malicious background software (also called
"malware") such as spyware, viruses, trojans and
the like.
2. Installed Mozilla Firefox browser; this is an
alternative internet browser. It can do everything
IExplorer can do, so you can use it to access
websites if IExplorer gives you problems in the
future.
3. Updated and Spybot Search & Destroy; this is an
anti-malware program that works very well.
4. Installed CCleaner; this software is a registry
cleaner, which means it cleans up and removes old
entries to your computer's registry. The registry
could be considered "the big filing cabinet" that
controls information about how to run programs for
your computer. Overtime the registry can become
cluttered with unused entries or old data.
5. Installed Revo Uninstaller to remove IExplorer;
integrated Windows software is hard to remove, but
Revo is an uninstalled program that is able to
remove Windows software. I wanted to remove
IExplorer so that I could reinstall it.
6. Reinstalled IExplorer and ran Windows updates.
7. Installed the newest version of Adobe Acrobat
Reader, QuickTime, and Java to avoid display or
compatibility issues.

IE was giving memory reading errors, had pop-ups
for fake anti-virus software, and had Google
toolbar. I did a number of things for Kathryn's
machine:

1. Reinstalled IE 7.
2. Installed Mozilla Firefox
3. Updated Spybot S&D and ran it.
4. Installed CCleaner and ran it.
5. Ran Windows updates.

After all of this I didn't have any more pop-up or
IE errors and was able to access WOU email and the
Banner SIS login screen.

She is still having trouble with her computer.
Now when she tries to go to www.wou.edu/newmail
it tells her it is an invalid certificate and it
is not recpommended that she go to this site.
We tried shutting down the browser and typing in
the url rather than using her shortcut. Same
message. She would like this taken care of
pretty soon. She did not call it an emergencey.
