Hi Matt,

I worked on your machine this afternoon in order
to address the virus warnings you were receiving.
your machine did not have a virus, but instead
several instances of spyware running. These
programs run in the background, hidden away, and
cause annoying pop-ups like the ones you were
getting. Clicking on them, accepting them, or
inputing any information can be dangerous to your
computer and data stored on it. All spyware that
was on the computer has been removed with the use
if a program called Spybot Search & Destroy. You
may see that name in your Programs list, it is
okay software.

I noticed that many people use the machine. It
should be known that anything saved directly to
this machine (the C:\ drive or desktop for
example) is not safe. It is stored physically on
this machine's hard drive, which can fail, become
corrupted, or get infected by malware
(spyware/viruses). In order to keep your important
data safe please save anything you would not want
to lose to your MyDocuments(H:\) drive found in
"My Computer". The H:\ drive is specific to your
login and will be with your anywhere you login on
campus. It is specific to your login, which means
only your login and password can access it. The
C:\ drive can be accessed by anyone with
administrative access to the physical machine and
a little know-how. Also, H:\ drives are actually
stored on a server, not your physical machine's
hard drive. The server is regularly backed up, so
if data is accidentally lost it can be recovered
safely.

I made sure to update your computer with the
latest updates for it's software. Be careful what
you download and install. Do not click on anything
you do not trust or install anything you do not
fully understand. Spyware can sneak on-to
masquerading as legitimate software. If you
experience any further message or computer issues
please contact us. The extension is 88925.

Thank you,

I ran Spybod S&D. It found a number of Spyware
instances, so I cleared them out, immunized, and
also ran CCleaner. Sophos was installed, but on
actually starting up, so I had to reinstall that.
In delete profiles that were older than March of
08 because there were a lot of them. They are in
the administrator account's trash though, as of
right now. I noted the primary used of the machine
has documents saved to his desktop (his profile
was not deleted), so I plan to send an informative
email about the awesomeness of the h:\ drive. I
also installed updates for Windows. The computer
is good-to-go.

"Anytime" did not mean now. All of the football
coaches' offices and the football office itself
were locked.

W#20020206[Edit Inv] refers to a monitor and there are many
computers in that office.

Called back saying that any time would be fine
even if he is not in. They just want it taken care of.

Yesterday he noticed that whenever he tried to
open up IE7 he got an error message that said:
Windows could not open up the program, A virus
was detected, make sure you have an antivirus
program if not, click here to download one

He hits the X instead of the OK download button

There will be someone available all day at that
number 88516
