Eric, the hard drive was toast, along with the
system itself. I was unable to boot the machine
or pull anything off the hard drive. Sorry for
the bad news! Let me know if there is anything
else we can do to accommodate you.

Thanks,

Brian

Left him a vm stating that the hard drive was dead
and so was the machine, which is out of warranty.

He came in wanted to know the status of his Mac.
He said that he has another machine set up right
now, but that the techs said they would try to
get some files off his original machine.

He said to give him a call at his office number.

Please set Eric Bruce up with a G5 tower from
our surplus supply with at least 19 inch flat
panel( see me if you can't find one I may have
one) IF the tower has less then 1GB of RAM see
me as well so I can order some additional RAM to
get it there. We need to get him a working MAC
ASAP to replace the iMac that is toast

Eric,

The problem you are describing with the iMac is
indicative of a hardware problem that causes
overheating. Unfortunately, your system is out of
warranty.

If we take it in to be serviced, it will be
relatively expensive, and you might want to get a
new one instead.

The problem is that the capacitors on the system
board fail and that allows voltage fluctuations
that cause the system restarts and the other
problems you are describing.

At a minimum it would require Apple to replace the
system board, and since the warranty has expired,
it will likely cost around $800-$1000.

This is indicative of a system overheating.
Common problem for these units, and this unit is
out of warranty.

Eric just called and said that he is having
issues with his computer. It often goes to the
regular white mac screen, without the apple logo
and then starts humming loudly. He has to reboot
several times before it starts working again.

He is available until 12:30 today and won't be in
the rest of the week. Late morning/Early
afternoon on Monday works well for him.
