Was able to clean them off with a combination of
Windows Defender, Malware-bites, and Spybot S&D. 
Had user login to verify successfully.  Will keep
tabs on this trouble call in case such issues
arise again in the future.

sounds like windows antivirus 2008.

He has scanned the machine with Sophos and found 
nothing. The alerts are coming from somewhere 
else. He said they had a "red shield logo".
