I've got this problem fixed and am updating the OS
now. I'll give him a call to let him know it's done.

I ended up re-installing the OS around his user data.

I have put the laptop and its power cords in the
tech shelves with  copy of its inventory info...
he say as he will be back later to check things
out after class and is very anxious to get this fixed
