Hi Elisa, this is Todor with UCS.
Please, follow these steps to turn the Desktop
shortcut back on:

1. Click on your desktop
2. Click on Finder (top left next to the Apple button)
3. Select Preferences...
4. Click Sidebar
5. Under the category PLACES check the box right
next to Desktop

This should do it.

Elisa called back and got her computer working 
but still needs help with the laptop.  It used to 
have a save to the desktop icon but some how has 
disappeared and she would like it added back if 
possible.

Her desktop will not turn on.  Then is also 
having a problem with the department laptop as 
well.  The desktop is the priority.  Laptop
