Thank you, Brian.  Your instructions were very
clear and the procedure worked, but not on my Mac.
 I could hear the connection "clunk" but could not
find a window or a link under homes in the Finder.
But when I went over to the lab and signed in on a
Mac there, the hidden folder opened right up.  Any
idea why?

Should this procedure be in the UCS FAQ's?  That's
where I looked first for help, since I remembered
getting an email about this sometime in the recent
past.  But it just described the off campus
storage and other backup related questions, not
self-help.

Anyway, thanks a lot!  Disaster averted!

I may need assistance with backup for a file I am
unable to access.  After shutting down and
rebooting I still get the message:
Excel cannot open this file.  The file may have
been damaged or modified from its original format.

The file is:

Is there something I can try before asking you to
retrieve the tape and give me a backup?
