Hi Paul,

Nice to hear from you on this issue. During the
Fall term, I found through experimentation that
setting the NIC in the machine to "100 Mbps full
duplex" fixed my network speed issue at the time.
Instead of taking 20-30 seconds to save things to
my network drives, it only took a second or two.
After Spring Break I noticed that things had
changed. I was actually having slow network
access again. On a hunch that you folks had been
working on the network over break, I went back
into the device manager and changed the NIC back
to "auto negotiate". The negotiated speed is now
1 Gbps and things are saving faster than ever.

I think we can go ahead and close that ticket.

Good Morning,

In the fall we received an email from you
concerning your computer running very slow after
moving into your (then) new office. At that
time, I slowed down your network speed which,
ironically, should have made your computer run
faster. Over spring break, I pulled new wire into
rooms 209 - 214 and raised your network speed back
up to the maximum.

I still have the original ticket open, so I wanted
to check with you on the status. I hope your
computer is running at least as well as it did
before if not better.

Can you let me know so I can close this ticket?
Thanks

Hello Grant Smith,

I am Maylimi with UCS.
I will first confirm with the concerned persons
dealing with the network over there if its the
network thats causing the problem. If not,I'll come
over at 9 :15 on Wednesday as you told me that you
are available then and try to do the defrag and
ccleanup for you.I have uninstalled , reinstalled
and updated your Sophos as of now.Can you please
let me know if that helped with the access speed
at all?

Thank you,
Maylimi

Hi Maylimi,

Sounds like some of my information with the
university still needs updating. I moved to NS
213 this Fall and that is the room that has the
computer in question.

My Thursdays and Fridays are pretty packed, so the
best time for me would be on a Monday or Wednesday
from 9:15-11:45 am (my office hours for students).

The issue with my computer doesn't really seem to
be the speed of the computer itself but the speed
of its connection with network drives (I: and H:
in particular). When I go to save PowerPoint
files to my I: drive or copy a file over there,
the speed is typically around 200 KB/s. That
results in a 6-10 MB PowerPoint file taking 15-20
seconds to save. My old computer in NS 010 (which
was the same model) didn't have these issues.

Thanks for sending the email.

Hello Grant Smith,

I am Maylimi with UCS.I am following up on your
service request saying your computer is running slow.
I had left you a vm on October 5th 8 am.I had also
come over to NS 010 on October 8th 11:30 am and
found that there is no nameplate on that door.

Can you please give me an appointment for looking
into the issue?

Thank you for your patience,
Maylimi

Hi UCS people,

I recently was moved to a different office in our
department and changed to a new computer in the
process. That computer is #20090518[Edit Inv]. After
using this computer for a few days, I've noticed
that this computer seems to save and transfer
files to the H: drive at a much slower rate than
my previous computer (which appears to be the
same model as this one). In a test a moving some
files to the H: drive, I'm only seeing transfer
rates of ~200KB/s. That seems particularly
slow. When saving my lecture powerpoint files
over there, I was used to it only taking a second
or two on my previous machine. Now it's taking
15-20 seconds.

I'm wondering if this machine needs to be checked
out for these performance issues?

Thanks for your help.
