The low-voltage differential signalling cable came
loose from the lcd display.  Put that back in
place and the machine is now showing a normal screen

I will leave the laptop at your desk I tested the
VGA out and it works as extended display but a
barely visible image is on screen so it appears to
be a back lighting issue despite my attempts to
adjust screen brightness via keyboard.  He uses a
docking station with external monitors at his
desktop so this primary station, but has a temp
available to him in his office
