The remote scan software had not been registered, and the trial 
period expired.

When she tries to use the scanner it has a box
with scanner setting but there is nothing she can
click on and it doesn't respond.  She tried
restarting the computer and same message with
settings came up and then an error that says
cannot connect to server.  The scanner says ready
though.
