Called up AppleCare. They're sending out a Magsafe 2 to 1
converter today and it should get here by tomorrow. If that doesn't
work, we can have them send out a tech.

Craig:

Can you stop by today or tomorrow to check out the magsafe
to magsafe 2 converter for the contact's display? I'm
pretty sure the pins are bent. The main thing to focus on
is the middle detection pin. If that thing is screwed up,
the converter won't know that it's anything is plugged into
it. If you can figure out what's wrong, you need to bring
it back to the office so that we can call Apple up to get a
replacement.

Available from 330-5 today, Wed 2-4, and Thurs 12-130.

Hey Natalie,

I just wanted to touch base with you again on the issues getting
power from your cinema display with the magsafe to magsafe 2
converter. I'm available at the following times to come over and
take a look at it with you:

This week:
Thursday 9:30 - 12:30
Friday 11:00 - 5:00

Next week:
Tuesday 9:30 - 12:30
Wednesday 8:00 - 12:00
Thursday 9:30 - 12:30
Friday 11:00 - 5:00

We can decide then if we want to have an Apple representative
come out and see what they can do from there. The magsafe 2
converter should be covered under the warranty since it comes
with the display.

Thank you,

Jared Petersen

Recieved an email letting me know that she hasn't had any issues with the display for the
past week.

Did mention that she was having a power issue though. The magsafe power adapter that is
built into the display is not charging her laptop. The display's power adapter connects into
a magsafe to magsafe 2 converter and then into her laptop. If she jiggles it, she can get
the LED on the adapter to come on. She thinks the middle detection pin on the adapter is
stuck. Display is under warranty, would have to call AppleCare though. Discussed options
for repair.

****This is an email****
Although I know this is not recommended, I'm going to give you
a temporary password because it's that urgent that these matters
be taken care of, and I really, really don't have any time to
dedicate to solving these issues while I'm using my office space.

username: dewittn
password: #TechSupport

I will change the password again as soon as I hear from you that
the issues have been resolved.

I was also aware that Dropbox is not a supported application due
to security issues, and I understand the recommendation, but I
use Dropbox. So I would greatly, greatly appreciate the ability to
be a local admin on the loaner computer until mine is returned
to me--especially because we don't know when that will be. It
makes sense to give me local admin privileges for a variety of
reasons, especially because as you said in your note, you are
busy, and I don't want to keep calling every time Chrome or
Firefox or Windows needs an update.

Please come by either today or tomorrow when you're available.

****This is an email****Jared:

Thanks for the update. I would like to suggest that my display and the adapter to connect the display to
the laptop also be taken into Apple Care. The problems most frequently occur when all the devices are in
use, so perhaps that would help them identify the issue.

I'd also like to request an additional display and the ability to connect it to the loaner laptop. At least that
way I have something somewhat similar to use while the other devices are in the shop.

As for the printers, there is a printer in my office and the HPE/PE copy machine. I'm not sure of the names.
There are 3 public printers available (one is only for the Athletics department, and it's located on the
second floor in the hallways, another is in NPE 115 and it's a smaller printer connected to an admin.
assistant's computer, and the large copy machine located in the copier room in NPE 115---this is the one I
need connected to). At minimum, I need the ability to print in my office, on my personal printer so I can
make copies downstairs. It's not connected via USB--they're all networked.

Hello:

I was recently given a loaner laptop to
temporarily replace my brand new MacBook Pro that
is in the shop. It's my understanding that the
repairs could take awhile, but I've not been given
any kind of update as to

I am a bit frustrated that nothing was set up on
the loaner laptop, besides allowing me to log in,
and that it was essentially just dropped off.

I can't print to my office printer. I can't even
map to a printer because I wasn't granted local
administrator privileges. This also means I can't
install things like Dropbox, or even give
permissions for updates for Firefox. I don't have
any of my drives mapped. I am in the middle of a
research project that requires the use of Atlas.ti
software and Parallels (both of which were
installed on my computer and are not installed on
this one).

I apologize if I was supposed to specify that all
of this be completed before the loaner laptop was
delivered, but I was under the assumption that the
bare minimum, like being able to print, local
admin privileges, and mapping drives would have
been done.

Service has always been friendly and prompt, and I
do appreciate that, but at bare minimum I would
really appreciate an update as to how long I can
expect to be without my computer (ballpark time
told to you by the Apple folks) and the ability to
print, have local admin privileges, and the
mapping of my drives.

I would appreciate it if someone would stop by and
address the above issues tomorrow morning between
8am and noon.

Thank you.

Nothing we can do. The loaner is too old to support the thunderbolt
display.

She would like to know if she can make the monitor
work. She needs a newer loaner to make this work
she thinks. Anything will work as long as the
monitor can be used with the loaner.

Natalie,

My coworker definitely had fun using your display for a week or
so as part of the testing. He really didn't want to return it.

Based on what you've said and the discussion page you sent me
(THANK YOU), your laptop may have an issue with the graphics
chipset and/or the motherboard. I think we'll have to send it in
for repair. I'll have to talk to my boss to see what she thinks. If
we are going to get it sent out, I probably won't be able to come
by until tomorrow or Friday to pick it up/take a look at it. We will
definitely give you a loaner to use while it's with Apple.

Does the power portion of the mac display not work at all, or do
you only have issues with it intermittently?

Thanks,

Jared

Hi Jared--

As soon as I got in on Monday morning, I tried to connect the
thunderbolt monitor to the laptop (and it connected/displayed
just fine) but I was unable to charge the laptop using that
thunderbolt cable. I'm able to use the laptop charger that
normally plugs into the wall just fine, though. That has been an
intermittent problem since I got the laptop/thunderbolt combo,
and it is happening more times than not now.

Interestingly, over break, without using the thunderbolt display, I
had some wonky display issues on the laptop. The bottom half of
the screen looked like bar codes--essentially exactly what this
person described.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/11502531#11502531

If you'd like to take the laptop and play around with it for awhile,
that would be completely fine with me (of course a loaner mac
laptop would be greatly appreciated so I can continue to work in
my office).

Let me know how you'd like me to move forward.

Thanks for the testing, and I hope you had fun using the display!

Hey Natalie,

I just wanted to follow up with you on the issues you've had
connecting your mac to your thunderbolt external display. We
tested it over the break with multiple computers and didn't have
any problems with it.

Have you had any problems with it after returning from vacation?

The only thing that I can think of is that the thunderbolt port is a
little wonky on your laptop. But since the issue is so intermittent,
I think that the Apple Store would have trouble reproducing the
problem as well, which makes it difficult for us to convince them
to replace parts.

Thanks,

Went over with Craig. We were unable to replicate the problem
and based on what she told us of the issue, we couldn't
determine whether or not it was a problem with the laptop or the
external display. We agreed to stop by Friday afternoon or next
Monday to bring the external display back to our offices and use
it over the break while she's gone to see if we can replicate the
problem with the display. If we can't replicate it, it's likely a
problem with the mac laptop itself.

If someone could come by and try to troubleshoot,
it would be greatly appreciated. It's been an
issue since I got the machine in September and I
am starting to fear it's a hardware issue.

I will be in my office today until 4:30pm, and
from 12-3 on Thursday (weather permitting, of
course). I can also be available on Friday
(weather permitting) from 11-11-45 and 2-4pm.

I can also have our administrative assistant for
the department let someone into my office to work
on the machine when I'm not present.

Thanks.

Hello!

I'm having an ongoing issue with connecting my
MacBook Pro to my Thunderbolt. When I connect the
Thunderbolt wire to the USB port on the MacBook,
the screen goes crazy (see videos below) and if it
doesn't go crazy, the macbook doesn't seem to
recognize that I've plugged the wire into it--the
screen stays black. When I plug in the power
adaptor from the Thunderbolt to the MacBook, more
than half of the time the charging light doesn't
come on at all as if it doesn't recognize that
something is plugged into it.

This is a rather hit or miss issue--I've not been
able to isolate any specific thing that I'm doing
that causes the issue. It can happen when I first
connect the Thunderbolt display to the MacBook, or
it can happen after they've sat connected for
several hours, and just starts in on the
wonky-crazies. I updated to Mavericks last month,
but these issues were already happening before
that. A technician came to my office for another
issue and he did a firmware update and he thought
that fixed the problem, but alas, it did not.

Issue #2: My machine has iPhoto and iMovie
installed, but I am unable to update those
applications because they were installed under the
ucsappstore username. It's asking me for login
information that I cannot provide. How can this
be remedied so I can update those applications?
