Hi Jack,

Let's shoot for 10 am on Mon, Apr 8 with delivery to my office (NS 218). If there is any set up needed for printer access, software loading, or the like, if you (or someone) can factor that into the process, that would be great.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Hi Jeffrey,

I need some additional information regarding service request #78208

Description: 2018 Computer is extremely slow replace with NVME

I have received a new 500gb NVME to put in your desktop whenever you are available; I should be here all this week if you are available over the break.

email I sent to Jeff 03/20/2024:
I am sorry you are having issues with your
computer.  We still would like to schedule you for
the hard drive NVMe replacement.  The people on
campus that have had their hard drive replaced are
very happy with that.
Currently, we are not replacing 2018XXXX machines
as of yet.  But it was not our decision to go
solely laptop.  It was the administration office
that determined that.  So we can not replace your
computer with a tower.  IF you are determined to
get a tower, I suppose your department could fund
it.  But UCS does not purchase towers for staff
anymore.
At this time, please work with our techs to get
that hard drive replaced and we will go from
there.
Thanks,Joanie

I was hoping you could take a look at this for me and tell me if desktop upgrades were something we would consider.

Hello,

As indicated in a previous email, I would much prefer to replace my machine with a desktop CPU rather than a laptop. Does UCS still provide a "computer allowance" for replacing machines, such that I could apply this allowance towards replacing my computer with the type of machine that will work better for my work environment (i.e., a desktop CPU). And then use other funds to make up any difference.

If you cannot assist with this question, could you please let me know who I need to speak with to discuss my specific computer needs for best conducting my job at WOU?

Thank you,
Jeff Templeton

Hello Jeff,

Our current setups we offer are a macbook or dell laptop setup. Each GFA setup comes with a new laptop, keyboard/mouse combo, and monitor. For a dell setup, we use the monitor as the docking solution as the new monitors have a plethora of ports for connectivity. On a macbook setup, we still offer a docking station as I/O on a macbook is quite limited. I am unsure if we are offering new desktops for special cases, and anything else would have to be purchased by the department I believe.

These setups in essence work just like a desktop, and if you don't move your computer around you may not notice the difference. I am unsure what WOU monitor(s) you are currently using, but if you are using one and it is an older one you may be able to keep it alongside the new monitor for a dual monitor setup if it's older than a 2014 or so.

Hi Jack,

Yes, I should explore getting a new machine. I do not want a laptop and docking set up, rather I prefer having an old-school desktop type machine. Are you all still providing "allowances" for upgrades and then departments can fill in the rest if the requested machine etc exceeds the allowance?
In science, we tend to need somewhat more robust machines than the standard; however, to get started, what is the standard desktop cpu you are currently using for upgrades?

Thanks - definitely need to get the ball rolling on the.

Cheers
Jeff Templeton

Hi Jeffrey,

I need some additional information regarding service request #78208

Description: 2018 Computer is extremely slow replace with NVME

I was wanting to check with you if it was okay to close this service request. Asides upgrading to a new computer, our current upgrade SSD's to speed up the hard drive are $27 for a 500gb model.

Let me know if this is something you are interested in,

Hi Jeffrey,

I need some additional information regarding service request #78208

Description: 2018 Computer is extremely slow replace with NVME

Yes, there was recommendation to upgrade the PC with a faster hard
drive. Upon reviewing this request, we may have two options: If you
need the machine for use before next month, we can install an NVME
drive in the computer. However, because this computer is a 2018,
next month in July you would be able to submit a GFA request for a
whole new computer altogether. Let me know what works best for
you,

-Thanks

Hi Jack,

The machine was running doggedly slow at one point. There was a
recommendation to replace the hard drive with a solid state drive (I
believe this was the plan). I had not followed through with that
because of timing and so forth. The machine makes some louder
noises, and probably could run better. What would you need to do to
replace the drive as far as timing, taking the machine, and so forth.

Thanks

Were you still needing this issue taken care of? The service request
was made some time in 2021, just thought I would check in and see
what the status was on that.

He didn't respond to any emails that were sent, it
might be better to call him or find him during
office hours. He might respond over the summer, I
recommend emailing him next week since school will
officially be over.

Hi Jeff,

We'll be able to do it early next week for you and
we shouldn't even need to take your machine to do
it. Since we are swapping the hard drives, if you
have anything that you need to keep off of your
old machine you will want to save it in the T-
drive or onto an external hard drive. let me know
if you need to save anything off of your computer
and if not we can get that swapped out on monday.

Thanks,
Justin

Hi Justin,

Yes, it is possible to replace the hard drive on
this machine during spring break. I will probably
not be working in my office, so I'm guessing
someone would need to come and get it. I'm not
sure what kind of access will be available to my
office, but would guess that Cinda or someone
could let you in to retrieve the machine. I will
need it back and set up to print, access the
network etc. by Monday, March 28, and will not
necessarily have time that day to troubleshoot
issues that might arise, so hopefully that will
not be a problem.

Please let me know what you decide, if you take my
machine, and when you expect it will be back in
action.

Thanks for your help with this.

Best.

Hi Jeffrey,

We were just emailing you regarding a service
request that we have for you. (#78208)

2018 Computer is extremely slow replace with NVME

Would it be possible to replace your hard drive
sometime during spring break with a new one? This
should help speed up your computer drastically and
wouldn't take long to be done.

Thanks,
Justin Cope
