Ken came by yesterday around 4pm. We were able to get his login to work with that workaround by not having the home folder auto-map, a problem we think is caused by Sonoma currently. After he logged in, I added his H drive and department drive, as well as set his account as an admin, added the printer that was on his loaner with his copy code, unbound and rebound to AD, as well as installed the VPN for him. We took back the loaner laptop, all that came back is the laptop itself.

The problem was something to do with Sonoma. No one could initially sign in because the root path for the home folder was wrong for some reason. The solution; was to turn off mapping the home folder for users. This would let them sign in initially at first, then we can manually add their drives like the H drive.

He left with his loaner again, and all that is left to figure out on this laptop is why his account won't sign in

He came by yesterday right before closing and I thought the swap was going to be just fine and such; but his credentials wouldn't let him sign in, it gave an error I had never seen before. I confirmed that my network account would sign in, and we also confirmed that his account could log into VDI / a windows computer, so I don't know what that is all about.

Hi Kenneth,

I need some additional information regarding service request #81465

Description: Having trouble completing windows and software updates **11/3**

I have your macbook pro all up to date and reimaged with Apple's latest Mac OS: Sonoma. 

It comes with our basic software currently, which is the Microsoft Office suite, Zoom, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Adobe. 

Do you need any special software reinstalled on your computer before getting it back to you?

Laptop from UCS admin profile is able to load new update; updates to sonoma. I thought it would be a good idea to reimage this entire device as he has had it since 2020 and lord knows what stuff creeps into the background processes on computers after so long... but this device seems quite snappy still, instantly logging into the UCS admin profile, and he has only taken up around 70gb's worth out of 256gb which is impressive to say the least. I am going to update this device without reinstalling first, to save what he still has on this computer and see if this will be adequate.

Wasn't able to drop off that loaner I was preparing as it had a bad battery; I am getting 20170674[Edit Inv] all up and ready, its battery works. He said he will be on campus this friday (11/3/23) from noon till 4 or so, so that would be a good time to swap the devices out.

The macbook I was working on for this has a bad battery! The only other macbook loaner available is 20170674[Edit Inv], which I began updating. He said he would be available this Friday, from noon till 4, so I should be able to get macbook loaner 20170674[Edit Inv] (sitting on my desk) ready to go for that in time.

I almost have this loaner laptop all ready to go so we can swap out and update / image your current laptop. Is there any special software that you will need installed on this loaner while you are using it?

Did we try looking in the app store for an OS 
update. On older MacOS it sometimes wont find 
updates. Updated one recently where I had to go into 
the appstore to update the device.

still no sign of his machine self updating, I hadn't thought to log out of his profile and into UCS admin to see if that would push an update, but ultimately - his machine is a 2019, and it is still sporting Catalina; so there is about 4 years of potential junk in the background slowing this machine down. I recommended to reimage the laptop, to which he agreed. I said I would prepare a loaner laptop for him and let him know when we can exchange those.

Hi Jack,
Next week, Monday and Wednesday at noon is a good time for someone to come by my office.  Those days I'm in the classroom from 10 to noon and again from 2 to 4.  Noon to 2 I have office hours, but if any students need my help we can sit in the hallway.  Tuesday I'll be on campus from 10 until 4, and I'm available during those hours, except from 1:30 to 3:30, when I have zoomly office hours scheduled.  

The problem I encountered yesterday is that when I select Software Updates within system preferences, the wheel starts spinning and goes nowhere.  The techs who came by yesterday to look at the machine said that apparently my status as an administrator on the laptop is not fully established.  I'm happy to let you do whatever it takes to get the machine working.  I'm pretty sure that the OS on the machine right now is out of date, so getting that updated may be a good idea.  

I hope this helps you get a better sense of the help I need.  Please let me know if the times I'm available will work for scheduling a visit.  Thanks for your help.

When are you available next week to look at this issue? It seems odd to me that none of the common fixes have worked yet, and if they still don't continue to the only way to update the laptop may be reinstalling MacOS. Normally, when I have this issue on my personal machines, I hit the advanced... button in the software update menu and click okay, which refreshes the search queue it seems. 

If reinstalling macos doesn't sound like a serious hassle to you, I would recommend considering this as it would potentially free up a lot of space and speed on your current computer as well.

Confirmed computer wouldn't update. We will 
schedule a time to help install the OS. Couldn't 
figure it out while we were there. Need to go to 
Apple and upgrade OS from there, Upgrade to 
Monterey -> Ventura

Still no luck finding those settings.  Again, 
thanks for all your helpful suggestions.  Perhaps 
setting up a service request would be best.  I'm 
on campus tomorrow (Wednesday), but not Thursday 
and Friday this week.  Tomorrow I'm in class from 
10 to noon and again from 2 to 4, but otherwise I 
can be here in my office.  This isn't urgent, but 
I would like to have someone come by to look at it 
if possible.

Hello,

It could also be an issue with internet connection 
or not having enough space on the computer, these 
are also reasons the system preferences could be 
stuck loading. For these you can try disconnecting 
and reconnecting to the wifi (or unplugging and 
plugging back in the ethernet cord) and checking 
the system storage in the settings to empty bins 
and optimize storage. If it's still not working, I 
can create a service request for a tech to come 
out and take a look at it sometime this week.

Greetings,
I'm trying to be a good steward of the laptop with 
which you have provided me to do my work for the 
University.  So today I'm trying to check for 
software updates, and I've opened the system 
preferences software updates function.  I've had 
this open for about an hour now, but the 'checking 
for updates' wheel has been spinning the whole 
time, with no end in sight.  Any advice you have 
on how I should proceed will be greatly 
appreciated.  Thanks for your time.
