I have not used that feature here at WoU. The
reason we don't use it is because the computer
name in Active Directory will be set to the same
name that you currently have. When you back up the
computer and restore it onto a new device. It will
essentially copy it exactly the way it is which
means there would be a conflict with the naming
scheme, this could cause issues with connecting to
the network or even accessing any department
drives or your personal drives on campus.

Although this approach might get you the data, it
might have driver conflicts or other issues with
connecting to Wou's systems.

If you have any other questions please let me
know,

-Brady

Have you used this approach before?

Thanks,

2. External Drive Backup:

You can use an external hard drive to create a
backup on your Windows 10 PC and then restore it
on your Windows 11 PC. Windows has a built-in tool
called File History for this purpose:

- Connect an external hard drive to your Windows
10 PC.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > **Backup

- Set up File History to back up your files to the
external drive.

- After the backup is complete, connect the
external drive to your Windows 11 PC.

- On your Windows 11 PC, go to **Settings** >
**Update & Security** > **Backup** and restore
files from the external drive.

Before proceeding with any method, make sure to
create a backup of your important data to avoid
data loss during the transfer. Choose the method
that suits your preferences and technical comfort
level. If you're unsure, seeking assistance from a
tech-savvy friend or professional can be helpful.

If you have everything you'll need on an external
drive to copy to your new system, that will work.
As far as your browser, I would make sure sync is
on under your profile on the top right of your
browser. You can also export your passwords in
your password manager. If you go to the google
password manager you'll see settings on the right
and then in that section you'll find export. This
will export all of your saved files to a csv file
which we can import later. Some apps you may need
to redownload once you have the new device. I
wouldn't copy the entire C drive at once when
copying the files. I would copy each individual
folder, like your Documents, downloads, pictures.
Then I'd go to the C drive and copy each file
individually until you copy all of them. This way
you have everything off the computer, so if there
is something you missed, you can easily have it
available.

If you have any other questions feel free to let
me know,

I have most of my data copied to a SD drive (256
GB). I want to "Transfer" the working environment
(apps, cookies, passwords, etc.) as it saying here
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/move-
your-files-to-a-new-windows-pc-c7bb3950-cdf6-40d4-
8db3-a2d4f687fa4b. I guess I should take the
second option, but not exactly clear on what to
copy to the h drive, everything? just drag my c
drive to h? :).

Thanks,

Nothing specific, just anything you want to keep
should be moved to your H drive, beyond that, we
should be able to move the files over from the H
drive to your new computer when we set it up.

If you have any questions please let me know,

Hello Jie,

We received the 1TB nvme for your new laptop. I
put it into that laptop and have finished the
imaging process. It's my understanding that we
have to get software/documents off of your current
computer in order for us to set up the laptop with
your new monitor.

When you have time, go through all your documents,
files, and export your bookmarks, place them into
1 folder. Once you're back on campus I would place
that folder in the H drive. Once it's in your H
drive we can have you log in and put it on the new
computer.

This will be the easiest way to switch everything
over. If you need help, we would have to schedule
a time while im working for me to assist you. Once
we have completed that process we can schedule a
date/time for me to come set up your computer with
the new monitor/mouse/keyboard.

If you have any questions please let me know,

-Brady
