it was a hidden drop down menu that was keeping him from seeing the computer from the favorites menu.

The link you provided led me to the same ideas as 
what I had discovered before with an online 
search.  Thanks for the link.  The problem is that 
when I follow the steps suggested, what I'm seeing 
under settings for the Finder window doesn't match 
up with what is actually on my screen.  As is so 
often the case, the way this machine actually 
operates is not matching up with how I'm being 
told it is supposed to operate.  I suspect that 
it's entirely unreasonable for me to expect things 
to work as they are supposed to work.   I'm just 
trying to do my job, but not having much luck with 
that, at least not with the equipment the 
University has provided for me.  This laptop's WOU 
number is 20191089[Edit Inv].

Sorry to hear about these troubles, I found a link 
to apple's support page that contains a list of 
things you can try. I have attached it down below, 
hope it works. Please let me know how it goes, and 
if none of them achieve the goal please forward 
your device's WOU# so we can have our techs chime 
in/get a ticket created.

Greetings,
As I indicated last week in a couple of messages, 
the laptop I've been given to use is not behaving 
well.  When I open the Finder window, the desktop 
does not appear in the list of favorites on the 
left hand side of that window.   I have looked 
online for advice on how to make the desktop icon 
appear in that list, but none of the suggestions 
I've found have worked.  

This problem only started last week.  It makes it 
difficult for me to do my work, so if there's any 
way to get it working again I would be very 
grateful.  Please let me know if you have any 
ideas on how I should proceed.   Thanks for your 
time.
