WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000 music 00:00:04.000 --> 00:00:07.000 My name is Adry Clark, and I am the director of 00:00:07.000 --> 00:00:09.000 Service Learning and Career Development here at Western. 00:00:09.000 --> 00:00:12.000 And I am here to talk to you about 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:14.000 how to be successful at the career fair. 00:00:14.000 --> 00:00:17.000 So as you probably know we have a 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:21.000 experience fair coming up on Wednesday. 00:00:21.000 --> 00:00:25.000 We are going to have 55 organizations and companies here recruiting students 00:00:25.000 --> 00:00:28.000 for internships, and volunteer opportunities 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000 music 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:37.000 music 00:00:37.000 --> 00:00:40.000 Career fairs are really about meeting 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:45.000 people. So there are going to be all these people, coming here, setting up tables, 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:48.000 and hoping to meet our students. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:51.000 They are interested 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:53.000 Its maybe because they like the majors, or they like the 00:00:53.000 --> 00:00:56.000 students they have met from Western before, 00:00:56.000 --> 00:00:60.000 and they are interested in recruiting you for internships 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 volunteering, jobs, or just to get to know you 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:08.000 and kind of mentor you. Before going to a career fair it is always 00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:12.000 a good idea to do a little preparation. So one of the things you want 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:16.000 to do is you want to look up who is coming. And you want 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:20.000 to research the companies and you kind of want to rehearse a little bit and what to say. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:24.000 One of the things I wanted to show you real quick, 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:28.000 is on Handshake, which you can access on your Portal 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 you can see who is coming. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 And here you can view all employers coming. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:40.000 So you will have The Red Cross, Anytime Fitness, The Boys and Girls Club, 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:44.000 Catholic Community services, there are a couple of 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.000 healthcare companies, all kinds of different organizations that are 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:52.000 looking for students. So I would really strongly 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 encourage you to go on and find out information 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:60.000 maybe click on their website, and maybe learn a little about them. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:04.000 So that when you come to the fair you can have some really good questions 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:08.000 and conversation points that you can bring to them. What you want to 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:12.000 bring to the fair is, you want to bring a portfolio. 00:02:12.000 --> 00:02:16.000 And that is really where you can keep some resumes, maybe a notepad, 00:02:16.000 --> 00:02:20.000 to write down some points that you learned, or things you want to ask. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 It is best not to have a big 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:28.000 backpack, and you want to look as professional as possible. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:32.000 So what to wear, thats always a big thing to think about as you are preparing for a fair. 00:02:32.000 --> 00:02:36.000 What do you want to wear, that shows you are a professional, and shows you are going to 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:40.000 fit in with whatever environment you are going to. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:44.000 you want to be professional, but for this type of fair, depending on who you are 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:48.000 interested in, you are probably going to be more like a business casual type 00:02:48.000 --> 00:02:52.000 of outfit. So not necessarily a full on suit, 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:56.000 and things like that unless you want to talk to one of the accounting firms or 00:02:56.000 --> 00:02:60.000 a corporation, you might wear like a sweater set or just 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:04.000 more a slightly casual outfit. Dark slacks and a 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.000 top, a button down, is a very safe choice. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:12.000 So this is something you do not want to wear. You do not want to wear something 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000 that is to casual, or funny, or something like that. In a couple 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:20.000 of weeks we will have a criminal justice fair, and its probably not a good idea to wear 00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:24.000 your terrorist shirt to that one. So introductions are really important, 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:28.000 so when you go to the fair you will see all these different tables that 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:32.000 are set up. Some of them are going to be very popular, there is going to be a crowd 00:03:32.000 --> 00:03:36.000 of people around them, but when you really get your chance to talk to them, 00:03:36.000 --> 00:03:40.000 and make that connection, you want to make eye contact, 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:44.000 You will make a comfortable eye contact so your body 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:48.000 language needs to be very positive and bright. So you want to smile and just 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.000 be very friendly, and you want to offer a firm 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:56.000 handshake. So why don't you go ahead and practice with eachother real quick. 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:60.000 Give a nice, firm handshake. Just kind of grab 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:04.000 like somebody said, couple of pumps, and 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:08.000 say your name, introduce yourself. So introduction 00:04:08.000 --> 00:04:12.000 is a really critical part, and we are going to practice that a little bit. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:16.000 So what I have here with me, is something called the 30 second infomercial. 00:04:16.000 --> 00:04:20.000 As a kind of a fill in the blanks, and I would love for you to 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:24.000 if you want to you can fill it out now or you can just 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.000 fill it out in your mind. But what you want to include in a 30 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:32.000 second introduction is something about 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:36.000 your major, your experience. Maybe some skill 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:40.000 that you have been developing, and a little bit of 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:44.000 your goals. And just kind of practice giving 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:48.000 out a quick infomercial. So this is just practicing 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:52.000 and by the time you go you are going to feel confident when they ask you 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:56.000 so tell me a little about yourself. So during the fair, 00:04:56.000 --> 00:04:60.000 you want to work your plan. you want to have maybe five or six 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:04.000 organizations that you really want to visit and really impress. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:08.000 But I recommend warming up 00:05:08.000 --> 00:05:12.000 with some other ones. Warm up with some that you may not be as interested 00:05:12.000 --> 00:05:16.000 in, just to kind of get comfortable in that situation. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:20.000 And then when you are ready, take a deep breathe and go talk with your employeers 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.000 that you want to talk to and you want to connect with. What I would really 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:28.000 recommend, that in your research you kind of find some questions for each 00:05:28.000 --> 00:05:32.000 of them. Tell them that you went on their website and you read about this program 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:36.000 and tell me a little more about that, and you will impress them. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:40.000 More than you know, they will be so happy and they will think you are the smartest 00:05:40.000 --> 00:05:44.000 person they have ever met. So some questions you may want to ask. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:48.000 You want to ask something a little bit deeper. You might ask what are the traits 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:52.000 and skills of people who are most successful in this role? 00:05:52.000 --> 00:05:56.000 Why did you decide to work for this organization? What are some things 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:60.000 that your company has done that you are proud of? So you 00:06:00.000 --> 00:06:04.000 can ask some deeper questions even if you do not have a lot of information. 00:06:04.000 --> 00:06:08.000 What you do not want to ask is, so what do you do? 00:06:08.000 --> 00:06:12.000 Because you can look that up. Its so easy to look that stuff up now. 00:06:12.000 --> 00:06:16.000 What can your company do for me? You do not want to ask that. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:19.000 You want to be about what can you do for them. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:22.000 How many hours do you work? How much do you get payed? 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.000 You do not want to ask those questions. Right now you are just 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:29.000 exploring, and you are trying to make that connection. 00:06:29.000 --> 00:06:32.000 At the time if they offer you a position then you can ask 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:36.000 more about those things, and they will make you an offer and they will 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:39.000 give you that information in due time. 00:06:39.000 --> 00:06:43.000 Before you leave the employer, ask for a business card. 00:06:43.000 --> 00:06:47.000 Often times they will hand that to you or you can ask, is that ok 00:06:47.000 --> 00:06:51.000 if I get your business card. And then you can ask them what might be a way 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000 to follow up with you. Would it be ok if I emailed you? 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:59.000 I would love to follow up and send you my updated resume. Is that ok? 00:06:59.000 --> 00:06:64.000 And then you want to thank the recruiter for his/her time. Afterwards, 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.000 make a few notes, if there was something you noticed cause what you want 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:11.000 to do is send an email later, a thank you email, 00:07:11.000 --> 00:07:14.000 but you also want to reflect on it. How did it feel 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.000 to you, what was it like for you, what did you learn? 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:21.000 And is that something that you may want to explore? 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:26.000 What does it say about your possible career exploration. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:30.000 Cause you may have gone thinking one thing, and you are going to learn a lot, 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:35.000 and it gives you some food for thought as you are exploring your career options. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:40.000 And then follow up, write a thank you letter. If you write or just send 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:43.000 an email, if you write an email thanking them and referring to a 00:07:43.000 --> 00:07:47.000 point in your conversation, I really appreciate what you told me about this, 00:07:47.000 --> 00:07:52.000 and tell them what you learned, and helped you realize you 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:57.000 it was a great fit for your goals. You just want to reiterate your interests, 00:07:57.000 --> 00:07:60.000 they will be very very interested in talking to you because 00:08:00.000 --> 00:08:03.000 now you are showing some good manners, and good professionalism. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:08.000 Alright. So thats it, good luck! 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:12.000 music 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:14.000 music
