WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:04.000 music 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:09.000 music 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:12.000 Good afternoon everyone. 00:00:12.000 --> 00:00:16.000 Thank you for coming to our academic excellence presentation. 00:00:16.000 --> 00:00:23.000 Today you are going to hear from two of my students from the winter term. 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:30.000 in the foundation scores they prepare a wonderful presentation that I think you will enjoy. 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 They agreed to share it will you today. So please welcome 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:40.000 Holly and Jalen 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:46.000 So our in class presentation required us to summarize our assigned chapter and present information 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:50.000 about each career in that chapter and then find a journal article 00:00:50.000 --> 00:00:54.000 to summarize in our career and finally create an application activity. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:60.000 And a lot of people played Kahoot or did question and answer and you will see what our activity is later on today. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 What is therapeutic exercise? 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:15.000 Therapeutic exercise is a variety of physical activities that help restore and build: strength, endurance, flexibility and balance. 00:01:16.000 --> 00:01:21.000 In the history of therapeutic exercise I am not going to go over it because it is all in your packet. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:27.000 But what I just wanted to point out was how different we treat those with disabilities now compared to back then. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:35.000 Back then, pre Renaissance era people with disabilities were considered outcasts, 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:43.000 from society and deemed completely useless. Today we are much more understanding and accepting of those with disabilities and that's 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:48.000 why these careers are available for us to pursue. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:55.000 My career was an athletic trainer and in the 1950's, they were in gymnasiums doing pretty much everything. 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:61.000 From doing laundry, to custodial responsibilities, to repairing equipment, even driving the team bus. 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:07.000 Now days, they are considered to be a health care profession that focuses on prevention, clinical diagnoses, and immediate care and rehabilitation. 00:02:08.000 --> 00:02:14.000 The first athletic training rooms consisted of a table and a whirlpool tank shoved in the corner of a locker room. 00:02:14.000 --> 00:02:20.000 Now days, they have a treatment and rehab area, hydrotherapy areas and a space for injury prevention. 00:02:20.000 --> 00:02:24.000 Such as taping, wrapping and bracing. These are all generally located in 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:28.000 highschools, colleges or professional sport teams facilities. 00:02:28.000 --> 00:02:34.000 In the top right you can see a universities hydrotherapy area which looks a lot like a nice hot tub. 00:02:34.000 --> 00:02:39.000 On the top left you can see a more low budget, high school hydrotherapy area. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 Bottom left you can see a lot of taping and wrapping areas. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 Botton right you can see a lot of rehab equipment. 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:57.000 read slide 00:02:57.000 --> 00:02:64.000 Degrees in exercise science like here at Western do not qualify you to sit for the BOC exam, so you would have to go to graduate school and 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:06.000 obtain your Master's. 00:03:06.000 --> 00:03:12.000 All the profession organizations at the state levels there is the Oregon Athletic Trainers' Society 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:16.000 at the national level there is the National Athletic Trainers Association 00:03:16.000 --> 00:03:23.000 and internationally athletic training is not considered a career in every country so these are the popular countries that it includes. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:29.000 In the United States the most relevant association is the National Athletic Trainers Association. 00:03:29.000 --> 00:03:34.000 It was founded in 1950 with 200 people and these are their logos all throughout the years. 00:03:34.000 --> 00:03:38.000 Athletic trainers have two journals. The Journal of Athletic Training and 00:03:38.000 --> 00:03:40.000 the Athletic Training Education Journal. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:45.000 One is published monthly and the other quarterly and they both have the latest reasearch in each of their topics. 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:48.000 My journal article was from the Journal of Athletic training and it 00:03:48.000 --> 00:03:52.000 concerns the NBA and the increasing amount of injuries they have every year. 00:03:52.000 --> 00:03:56.000 and Melanie Lewis concluded: There is a higher injury list directly 00:03:56.000 --> 00:03:60.000 related to a higher performance load and fatigue. More years playing in 00:04:00.000 --> 00:04:03.000 the NBA and being shorter than the average height. 00:04:03.000 --> 00:04:06.000 My career was therapeutic recreation specialists. 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:12.000 Therapeutic recreation specialist help those with disabilities restore function, 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:17.000 reduce and eliminate disability effects and develop independence. 00:04:17.000 --> 00:04:21.000 These are some of the activities recreation therapists would do to help 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:24.000 their clients achieve success. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.000 I am going to use examples from my place of employment which is 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:32.000 Oregon State Hospital. At the state hospital the therapeutic 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:36.000 recreational specialist are like the fun parent. 00:04:36.000 --> 00:04:40.000 They get to do all the fun activities with the patients and the patients love them. 00:04:40.000 --> 00:04:48.000 So we have a bunch of art groups, drawing, coloring, pottery, beading, collage making, 00:04:48.000 --> 00:04:51.000 dance. There is not really dancing going on there but music 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:55.000 plays a lot in communal areas there is always music playing in the background. 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:60.000 And in a lot of units have MP3 players that 00:05:00.000 --> 00:05:03.000 the patience can check out and listen to music on their own. 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:07.000 Drama I have been there for nine years and there's only been two plays 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:11.000 that have gone on. I think there would be more but it just kinda depends 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:16.000 on the patient population that wants to do it. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:20.000 The community reintegration outings during treatment 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:25.000 they go volunteer at the humane society, go bowling, go hiking 00:05:25.000 --> 00:05:29.000 go biking, go on walks, go out to eat, go shopping. 00:05:29.000 --> 00:05:34.000 and animal interactions. There are a couple service dogs that come in 00:05:34.000 --> 00:05:37.000 the patients can pet them and walk them around the quads. 00:05:37.000 --> 00:05:43.000 Also at the beginning of the year on our most behaved unit there are two live in 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:50.000 dogs there now and its the patients responsibility to feed them and walk them and take care of them, 00:05:50.000 --> 00:05:53.000 and so far I have only heard good things about that program. 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:58.000 Right now there are only four states that require licenses and they are the 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:62.000 states in green Utah, Oklahoma, North Carolina and New Hampshire. 00:06:02.000 --> 00:06:05.000 and then three states are in the process of getting licenses 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:09.000 which is California, Pennsylvania and New York. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:13.000 There are three academic pathways to become a recreational therapist. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:19.000 The first one requires a bachelors in recreational therapy and clinical hours. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:26.000 The second two require a bachelors in any subject and a certain amount of paid, full time work experience. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:33.000 Once you past the exam you are a certified therapeutic recreational specialist. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:39.000 These are professional organizations. Washington state has one but Oregon does not but they belong 00:06:40.000 --> 00:06:44.000 to the Pacific Northwest Chapter. Here are some international 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:48.000 organizations. This is Canada's national one and it looked like 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:51.000 each providence had their own. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:56.000 And then in this journal article I found this article in the Therapeutic Recreation Journal 00:06:56.000 --> 00:06:61.000 and it talked about how girls diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder 00:07:01.000 --> 00:07:05.000 don't get any physical activity. So they created a summer camp for 00:07:05.000 --> 00:07:10.000 girls and they initially measured their fundamental motor skills, 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.000 went through the camp and then measured them at the end and they all showed improvement. 00:07:15.000 --> 00:07:18.000 For our activity today we are gonna have you get into groups. 00:07:18.000 --> 00:07:22.000 I'm gonna say three groups. 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:30.000 and I want you all to pretend that you are senior living in a residential care facility and it's your first day there 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:37.000 and you don't know anybody, and me and Jalen are gonna be the therapeutic recreational specialists. 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:40.000 music 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:47.000 music 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:50.000 are you guys ready to discuss? 00:07:50.000 --> 00:07:56.000 Question number one. Out of all of the activities which did you find the most difficult and why? 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:58.000 We will go with this group. 00:07:58.000 --> 00:07:63.000 For me it would probably be the reading part because in one part it was super blurry. 00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:08.000 How did the music make you feel? Did it insight any memories? 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:13.000 I said it made me think about my parents. Just because it is from the eighties and it's their music. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:19.000 Doing this activity do you feel like you understand them more and you will be more patient with them? 00:08:19.000 --> 00:08:22.000 Yeah I will definitely be more understanding and patient. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:27.000 Alright thank you. That is it. Thank you everyone. 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:32.000 music
