the world. 00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:52.000 Congratulations class of 2021! 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:56.000 Music 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:60.000 Music 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:04.000 Music 00:09:04.000 --> 00:09:06.000 Good evening and congratulations to all of the 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:10.000 graduating wolves of 2021. 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:12.000 No matter where you're going today's ceremony from 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000 or where you have spent the majority of the academic year, 00:09:16.000 --> 00:09:18.000 everyone celebrating today has been 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.000 part of an experience that has been 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:24.000 challenging, that has tested out perseverance, and that has been- 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:26.000 dare I say: unprecedented. 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.000 I know I just helped someone win a $5 bet, 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:32.000 banking unprecedented would be said today. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:36.000 Now you would think with the year we've all 00:09:36.000 --> 00:09:40.000 had that students would choose to focus on themselves and just get 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:42.000 through the year in one piece. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:45.000 Having had the distinguished privilege of serving as your student 00:09:45.000 --> 00:09:48.000 body president, I can tell you that this is far from 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:50.000 what I saw on our campus. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000 As a unit we have spoken up 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:56.000 and strategically collaborated with our university to suit our 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:60.000 needs and desires both as it relates to the Covid-19 pandemic 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.000 and otherwise. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:04.000 I think this point deserves an example that 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:08.000 demonstrates the excellent work of students this year. 00:10:08.000 --> 00:10:10.000 At the beginning of the pandemic in the previous 00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.000 spring, students were offered the 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:16.000 ability to opt into the satisfactory no credit grading option, 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:19.000 which might be better know as the pass no pass option. 00:10:19.000 --> 00:10:21.000 This allowed students to obtain credit 00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:24.000 for a class without it impacting their GPA 00:10:24.000 --> 00:10:28.000 as we tread through the challenging characteristics of distance learning. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.000 After working very well in the spring, 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:34.000 this opportunity was no longer available in the following fall. 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:37.000 Students vocally identified this as a need 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:40.000 for all terms impacted by the pandemic. 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:44.000 Through thoughtful planning, collaboration and dedication 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:47.000 students lead the charge to see this change be successfully passed 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:52.000 and implemented on our campus for the previous two terms. 00:10:52.000 --> 00:10:55.000 Can you imagine, even just two years ago, 00:10:55.000 --> 00:10:57.000 professors willingly letting students 00:10:57.000 --> 00:10:60.000 opt out of the traditional A-F grading model? 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:04.000 If you're like me and have ever tried to get an 89% rounded 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:08.000 up, I think you know how this would've gone. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:10.000 But this year has seen more than just policy 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:13.000 changes made through bureaucratic means. 00:11:13.000 --> 00:11:16.000 Students have worked all year to establish the following standard 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:18.000 in the simplest of terms: 00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:21.000 Everyone deserves a voice on the issues and 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:24.000 decisions that impact our experience at WOU. 00:11:24.000 --> 00:11:26.000 I want to take a moment and 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:29.000 specifically highlight the work and impact of the Instagram page 00:11:29.000 --> 00:11:32.000 Bipocatoregonuniversities and others like it. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.000 These pages have highlighted and promoted the voices 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:38.000 and experiences of students of color -- 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:41.000 on campus and across the state of Oregon. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:42.000 Because of your efforts, 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.000 your voices are being heard 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:46.000 on our levels of our campus community. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:48.000 I make these remarks 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:51.000 not to claim that student advocacy is anything new, 00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:54.000 but to recognize and commend the difficulty, urgency, 00:11:54.000 --> 00:11:57.000 and significance of strong community leaders 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:60.000 during times like these. 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.000 Whether or not your experience of the last year 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:04.000 was centered around campus current events, 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:06.000 there is something to be learned from this year 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.000 that we can take into our years beyond WOU: 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:11.000 We all have a voice 00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:13.000 and there is more than one way to be heard. 00:12:13.000 --> 00:12:16.000 Thank you and congratulations 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.000 to the class of 2021. 00:12:19.000 --> 00:12:24.000 Congratulations class of 2021! 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:36.000 Music 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:40.000 One of my greatest inspirations in life is Fred Rogers. 00:12:40.000 --> 00:12:43.000 You know, from Mr. Rodgers' Neighborhood? 00:12:43.000 --> 00:12:45.000 You may not have watched it growing up, 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:47.000 but I know you're familiar with his work. 00:12:47.000 --> 00:12:49.000 He once said, 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:52.000 "You don't ever need to do anything sensational 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:53.000 to get people to love you." 00:12:53.000 --> 00:12:56.000 From what I've seen this year, 00:12:56.000 --> 00:12:57.000 you don't even need to know someone 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:60.000 to be willing to share your love with the world. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:02.000 Like wearing a mask to prevent contagion, 00:13:02.000 --> 00:13:04.000 sometimes it's the simple gestures 00:13:04.000 --> 00:13:06.000 that show you care about others. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:10.000 Nothing sensational, just being a good neighbor. 00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:13.000 So much has been asked of you this past year. 00:13:13.000 --> 00:13:15.000 As a student, and a person, 00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:17.000 you've been asked to carry on with your studies, 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:19.000 and your work, and your life. 00:13:19.000 --> 00:13:21.000 when so much has happened. 00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:24.000 I know students who, without warning, 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:25.000 found themselves becoming 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:28.000 the primary providers in their families. 00:13:28.000 --> 00:13:30.000 I watched sadly as many of my close friends 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:32.000 of the past four years 00:13:32.000 --> 00:13:34.000 moved back home for remote learning. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:37.000 No matter how big or small your struggles were this year, 00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:40.000 you made it - the finish line. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:43.000 That is cause for celebration, 00:13:43.000 --> 00:13:47.000 even if they way we are celebrating has also changed. 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:49.000 In the four years that I have been at WOU, 00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:50.000 something that hasn't changed 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:52.000 is the kindness I've seen you show each other. 00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:54.000 I work at the Food Pantry on campus, 00:13:54.000 --> 00:13:57.000 where we help give people free access to food, 00:13:57.000 --> 00:13:58.000 almost every day. 00:13:58.000 --> 00:13:63.000 I am with students, staff, faculty, volunteers, 00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:05.000 and members of our community 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:08.000 who are proving help and showing care. 00:14:08.000 --> 00:14:10.000 One of my first memories of the Food Pantry 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:12.000 is from when I was a volunteer. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:14.000 Our pantry is set up like a grocery store. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:17.000 Customers can select whichever items 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:19.000 they want from the shelves, fridges, and freezers. 00:14:19.000 --> 00:14:22.000 Someone browsing the shelves asked, 00:14:25.000 --> 00:14:26.000 I'm sure some of you thought they were asking 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:29.000 for more of our canned peaches or chunky peanut butter. 00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.000 But really it was the opposite: 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:36.000 they were asking if there was enough for everyone. 00:14:36.000 --> 00:14:38.000 They wanted to make sure that there was enough to go around 00:14:38.000 --> 00:14:40.000 before meeting their own needs. 00:14:40.000 --> 00:14:44.000 That day, the people who came into the Pantry after that customer 00:14:44.000 --> 00:14:48.000 benefited from kindness they would never know about. 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:50.000 Since then, 00:14:50.000 --> 00:14:52.000 I have seen so many of our customers do the same thing. 00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:55.000 I know that so many of you, 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:57.000 with everything that has been asked of you this year, 00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:59.000 have quietly risen to the occasion, 00:14:59.000 --> 00:14:62.000 helping and showing care for others. 00:15:02.000 --> 00:15:04.000 Today is a celebration of your 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.000 achievements and accomplishments, 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:08.000 academic and otherwise. 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:10.000 But I also want to remind you 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:12.000 that a small kindness, 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:14.000 such as leaving a few cans on the shelf for others in need, 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:16.000 can make a big difference. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:20.000 Just think about what other seemingly insignificant 00:15:20.000 --> 00:15:22.000 things you did out of kindness and consideration 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:24.000 for others this past year. 00:15:24.000 --> 00:15:27.000 That customer probably has no idea that their 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:30.000 simple question struck a chord of compassion in me. 00:15:30.000 --> 00:15:33.000 But I loved them for that unsensational act; 00:15:33.000 --> 00:15:36.000 it will stay with me for years to come. 00:15:36.000 --> 00:15:40.000 In Mr. Rogers' final television appearance, 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.000 he shared these parting words, 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:46.000 to look with hope and confidence 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:48.000 on the months and years ahead. 00:15:48.000 --> 00:15:50.000 But I would like to tell you what I often told you 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:52.000 when you were much younger: 00:15:52.000 --> 00:15:55.000 I like you just the way you are." 00:15:55.000 --> 00:15:57.000 The way we all are right now, 00:15:57.000 --> 00:15:59.000 I know that you will continue to grow 00:15:59.000 --> 00:15:61.000 and care for the world around us, 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:04.000 despite any challenges ahead. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:06.000 Congratulations neighbors, 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:09.000 you are the graduating class of 2021. 00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:13.000 Hello graduates of WOU 2021. 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:16.000 On behalf of Natural Sciences and Mathematics 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:19.000 I want to wish you congratulations. 00:16:19.000 --> 00:16:22.000 It has been a very difficult year and you have worked hard 00:16:22.000 --> 00:16:25.000 and deserve many kudos and well wishes. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:28.000 Hello biology major graduates! 00:16:28.000 --> 00:16:31.000 On behalf of the biology department, congratulations! 00:16:31.000 --> 00:16:33.000 We are super proud of you 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:36.000 and we hope that you will keep in touch with us as you 00:16:36.000 --> 00:16:39.000 enter into many new exciting adventures. 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:41.000 On behalf of the Mathematics department, 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:45.000 congratulations to all math and computer science/math graduates. 00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:47.000 From integration by parts, 00:16:47.000 --> 00:16:50.000 to limits, to hypothesis testing, to normal subgroups, 00:16:50.000 --> 00:16:53.000 you have all persevered through so much 00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:55.000 and we are so very proud of you. 00:16:55.000 --> 00:16:56.000 Congratulations. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:16:58.000 WOU chemistry grads, 00:16:58.000 --> 00:16:60.000 we think you guys rock, 00:17:00.000 --> 00:17:03.000 and are so happy that you've made it this far. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:07.000 We can't way to see what you continue to do out there in the world. 00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:10.000 Congratulations to your great achievement. 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:12.000 On behalf of the Earth Science program, 00:17:12.000 --> 00:17:15.000 we want to say congratulations to everyone. 00:17:15.000 --> 00:17:17.000 You rock and go Wolves. 00:17:17.000 --> 00:17:24.000 Congratulations! Congratulations! 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:28.000 Music 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:32.000 Music 00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:33.000 Music 00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:35.000 I want to start out by saying, 00:17:35.000 --> 00:17:37.000 it is an honor to be speaking to all of you today 00:17:37.000 --> 00:17:39.000 even if it is not in-person. 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:42.000 I also want to say, congratulations graduates! 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:44.000 Today is the day. 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:47.000 The tank is clean, and the sun is shining, 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:49.000 and we are about to get out of... (gasp) 00:17:49.000 --> 00:17:50.000 THE TANK IS CLEAN! 00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:53.000 Just like that starfish in Finding Nemo, 00:17:53.000 --> 00:17:55.000 I am sure that some of you are just as surprised 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:57.000 that you've made it this far, and some, 00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:61.000 maybe just as scared as that starfish about your future. 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:03.000 Don't worry. You're not alone. 00:18:03.000 --> 00:18:06.000 I am feeling surprised and scared right now. 00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:08.000 Starting out at WOU 00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:09.000 when I was getting my bachelor's degree, 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:12.000 I thought I knew what I wanted to do once I graduated. 00:18:12.000 --> 00:18:16.000 During my time here, my ideas of what I wanted to do changed 00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:19.000 and changed again, and then changed again. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:20.000 Sound familiar? 00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:23.000 I also got discouraged because I tried out a couple 00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:26.000 of different jobs that I thought were what I wanted to do, 00:18:26.000 --> 00:18:28.000 but in the end, they weren't. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:29.000 Not knowing what I wanted to do, 00:18:29.000 --> 00:18:31.000 Jobs not working out -- 00:18:31.000 --> 00:18:33.000 I felt like I was wasting my time. 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:35.000 At the end of my bachelor's degree, 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:37.000 I still wasn't sure what I wanted to do, 00:18:37.000 --> 00:18:40.000 so I thought maybe getting my master's degree would help. 00:18:40.000 --> 00:18:42.000 Plus, I could keep going to school 00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:44.000 because I knew I was good at that. 00:18:44.000 --> 00:18:48.000 Shoot, I have basically been doing it my whole life. 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:52.000 Again, during my time getting my master's degree 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:54.000 my ideas of what I wanted to changed. 00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:55.000 Just like that starfish again, 00:18:55.000 --> 00:18:57.000 I was scared of what my future would look like. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:62.000 It wasn't until I ate a fortune cookie that I figure out I was okay. 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:04.000 My fortune read: 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:09.000 for the next moment". 00:19:09.000 --> 00:19:11.000 It was as this time that I knew everything 00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:13.000 I had done at my time at WOU, 00:19:13.000 --> 00:19:16.000 was setting me up to be in the best place for the next moment. 00:19:16.000 --> 00:19:18.000 I was doing great in school. 00:19:18.000 --> 00:19:20.000 I was a graduate assistant 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:23.000 and working on numerous projects that would help me in the future. 00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:25.000 I was doing my best at that moment 00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:29.000 to put me in the best place for the next moment. 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:31.000 It didn't matter that I didn't know 00:19:31.000 --> 00:19:33.000 what I was going to do when I graduated. 00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:35.000 When I stopped thinking about the future 00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:38.000 and started thinking about what I was doing in that moment, 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:40.000 my worries went away, 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:42.000 and I was happy. 00:19:42.000 --> 00:19:45.000 Also, if anything from this last year has taught us anything, 00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:48.000 it is that we can't fully prepare for the future. 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:50.000 We never know what is going to happen. 00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:53.000 Living in the moment is the best preparation 00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:54.000 for the next moment. 00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:57.000 Yes, it is hard sometimes to live in the moment. 00:19:57.000 --> 00:19:60.000 However, another quote that has gotten me though hard times is this: 00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:06.000 Let me say that again: 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:12.000 Look at yourself! 00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:14.000 You have made it though probably one of the most stressful years 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:17.000 with Covid and all of the other issues the world is facing, 00:20:17.000 --> 00:20:19.000 and yet you are here, in this moment 00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:22.000 with family and friends getting ready to graduate 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:24.000 And going to do great things with your degree. 00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:28.000 You are definitely far from what you once were. 00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:29.000 We all are. 00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:31.000 I know we all have goals and dreams, 00:20:31.000 --> 00:20:32.000 so we are not yet what we are going to be. 00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:35.000 With that I say, the tank is clean. 00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:37.000 Our future lies ahead of us, 00:20:37.000 --> 00:20:40.000 and we continue to grow and change and better ourselves. 00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:43.000 Even if we don't know what we will be. 00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:47.000 Congratulations class of 2021. 00:20:47.000 --> 00:20:52.000 Congratulations class of 2021 from graduate programs. 00:20:52.000 --> 00:20:64.000 Music 00:21:04.000 --> 00:21:08.000 Hello and welcome graduates, families, and friends 00:21:08.000 --> 00:21:10.000 to the already infamous and incredibly safe 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:16.000 Graduates, congratulations -- like for real. 00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:18.000 For making it this far. 00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:22.000 For being resilient, flexible, pushing past the Covid fatigue. 00:21:22.000 --> 00:21:24.000 It's been overwhelming to say the least. 00:21:24.000 --> 00:21:27.000 I am proud of each and every one of you. 00:21:27.000 --> 00:21:29.000 For those who have not used the library at any point 00:21:29.000 --> 00:21:31.000 in the last 4 or 5 years, 00:21:31.000 --> 00:21:32.000 hi, nice to meet you. 00:21:32.000 --> 00:21:35.000 My name is Marnasha Fowlkes-Cetz, 00:21:35.000 --> 00:21:37.000 my pronouns are she/her/hers. 00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:39.000 I was born and raised in Portland. 00:21:39.000 --> 00:21:41.000 and I am your Oregon Health and Science University 00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:44.000 School of Nursing Golden Lamp Awardee 00:21:42.000 --> 00:21:45.000 for the 2021 Monmouth graduating cohort. 00:21:47.000 --> 00:21:50.000 I am so pleased to be able to celebrate with you all today. 00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:53.000 The coolest thing I thought I would get by the end of this 00:21:53.000 --> 00:21:57.000 was a fancy, expensive piece of paper with my name on it. 00:21:57.000 --> 00:21:61.000 No, not the student loan bill that I am sure many of us are also anticipating. 00:22:01.000 --> 00:22:04.000 But the really cool one, with the thick paper 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:06.000 and decorative lettering that has your degree on it. 00:22:06.000 --> 00:22:09.000 It's a symbol of how hard you've worked, 00:22:09.000 --> 00:22:13.000 the long nights, heavy books, and dedication that you have, 00:22:13.000 --> 00:22:16.000 especially my nursing graduates, and it is well deserved. 00:22:16.000 --> 00:22:21.000 What actually has been the coolest thing I've gained in higher education? 00:22:21.000 --> 00:22:24.000 The ability to grow and become a nurse leader. 00:22:24.000 --> 00:22:28.000 Now, leadership is not a skill that is obtained and then completed. 00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:30.000 It is in constant ebbing and flowing, 00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:33.000 shifting and morphing to fit a circumstance. 00:22:33.000 --> 00:22:36.000 I believe there is this notion in our current culture that says 00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:39.000 leaders are loud, they are not. 00:22:39.000 --> 00:22:44.000 Someone's personality, temperament, the volume of their tone, 00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:47.000 doesn't determine how influential of a leader they are. 00:22:47.000 --> 00:22:51.000 It can also be easy to look to social media for who's the best leader. 00:22:51.000 --> 00:22:53.000 Who has the most followers? 00:22:53.000 --> 00:22:55.000 The Kardashians, Justin Bieber, 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:57.000 Addison Rae for all of the Tik Tok'ers out there. 00:22:57.000 --> 00:22:60.000 A leader is also not sized up by how many followers 00:23:00.000 --> 00:23:03.000 they may have but if they are worthy of following. 00:23:03.000 --> 00:23:05.000 As I reflect on my time in Monmouth, 00:23:05.000 --> 00:23:07.000 I have met and been able to collaborate 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:12.000 with some incredible faculty, staff, and ambitions student leaders. 00:23:12.000 --> 00:23:14.000 I have seen you break down barriers and, in their place, 00:23:14.000 --> 00:23:18.000 create new paths for future students to come. 00:23:18.000 --> 00:23:21.000 The monumental events of this past year have shown 00:23:21.000 --> 00:23:25.000 the power of courageous leadership and how participation though 00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:28.000 community efforts brings out the best of us. 00:23:28.000 --> 00:23:30.000 We have seen that when we are able to show up 00:23:30.000 --> 00:23:33.000 and rally around something that is bigger than ourselves, 00:23:33.000 --> 00:23:37.000 change that is bigger than ourselves also occurs. 00:23:37.000 --> 00:23:40.000 You were all a part of that. 00:23:40.000 --> 00:23:44.000 Fay Wattleton, a Black Nurse leader and activist 00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:48.000 puts it simply, the safest ship in a storm is leadership. 00:23:48.000 --> 00:23:51.000 So, I would like to challenge you all today to lead. 00:23:51.000 --> 00:23:53.000 Take the knowledge, the skills, the friendships, 00:23:53.000 --> 00:23:58.000 and the connections you've made back to communities you're going to, 00:23:58.000 --> 00:23:59.000 The ones you come from, 00:23:59.000 --> 00:23:61.000 and the ones that have yet to be created 00:24:01.000 --> 00:24:04.000 because you are the missing piece. 00:24:08.000 --> 00:24:11.000 Know that what you have gained during your time in higher education 00:24:11.000 --> 00:24:14.000 is so much more than what is written on that fancy piece of paper, 00:24:14.000 --> 00:24:17.000 that will eventually come in the mail. 00:24:17.000 --> 00:24:19.000 What you have done, what you will do, 00:24:19.000 --> 00:24:21.000 and what we get to celebrate today, 00:24:21.000 --> 00:24:23.000 will have lasting impacts. 00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:28.000 Thank you and congratulations. 00:24:28.000 --> 00:24:33.000 Congratulations class of 21 from the class of 2038. 00:24:33.000 --> 00:24:36.000 Yay! 00:24:36.000 --> 00:24:41.000 Congratulations to the class of 2021 from the class of 2040. 00:24:41.000 --> 00:24:45.000 Yay! 00:24:45.000 --> 00:24:57.000 Music 00:24:57.000 --> 00:24:61.000 Hello graduates, families, faculty, staff, and guests. 00:25:01.000 --> 00:25:03.000 My name is Victoria Scholerman, 00:25:03.000 --> 00:25:06.000 and I am the President of the Western Oregon University 00:25:06.000 --> 00:25:08.000 Alumni Association. 00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:10.000 I want to congratulate you, the class of 2021, 00:25:10.000 --> 00:25:12.000 on your commencement. 00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:15.000 And want you to know that we are immensely proud of you. 00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:17.000 Each year at graduation, 00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:20.000 the Alumni Association presents our most prestigious award: 00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:22.000 The Alumni Award of Excellence. 00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:27.000 This year's winner of the Alumni Award of Excellence is 00:25:27.000 --> 00:25:28.000 Dr. Phyllis Lee. 00:25:28.000 --> 00:25:32.000 Her achievements while attending Oregon College of Education, 00:25:32.000 --> 00:25:34.000 her dedication to education, 00:25:34.000 --> 00:25:37.000 and her passion for supporting underserved 00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:40.000 and under represented population 00:25:40.000 --> 00:25:44.000 has made her stand out as well deserving recipient of this year's award. 00:25:44.000 --> 00:25:47.000 Thank you so much and congratulations 00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:50.000 and welcome back to Western Oregon University Dr. Lee. 00:25:50.000 --> 00:25:52.000 It's great to be back, 00:25:52.000 --> 00:25:56.000 but it's also great to be honored with the 00:25:56.000 --> 00:25:58.000 award from the Alumni Association, thank you. 00:25:58.000 --> 00:25:61.000 Excellent. I want to ask you a couple questions: 00:26:01.000 --> 00:26:04.000 What was your first teaching experiences like? 00:26:04.000 --> 00:26:06.000 And what was your favorite part about them? 00:26:06.000 --> 00:26:10.000 I think all my teaching experiences 00:26:10.000 --> 00:26:12.000 were favorites in one way or the other. 00:26:12.000 --> 00:26:16.000 But it's the students, the faculty, and others that I got to teach with 00:26:16.000 --> 00:26:18.000 and the places in which I taught 00:26:18.000 --> 00:26:20.000 or worked with people in education. 00:26:20.000 --> 00:26:23.000 Wonderful. And what was the most significant 00:26:23.000 --> 00:26:26.000 experiences of your career? 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:30.000 I would have to say it was working with the centers 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:34.000 that provided assistance to school districts in 00:26:34.000 --> 00:26:36.000 Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Alaska, 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:40.000 to help them come into compliance with civil rights regulations. 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:42.000 And with title nine regulations. 00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:45.000 And to see the changes that could occur 00:26:45.000 --> 00:26:48.000 when people put their hearts and minds to the task. 00:26:48.000 --> 00:26:50.000 What an incredible experience. 00:26:50.000 --> 00:26:52.000 And then finally, 00:26:52.000 --> 00:26:53.000 what is the advice that you have 00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:56.000 for this year's graduating class of 2021? 00:26:56.000 --> 00:26:60.000 A lot of advice, but mainly to take 00:27:00.000 --> 00:27:02.000 advantage of the opportunities that you have 00:27:02.000 --> 00:27:05.000 in these temultuous times to do some wonderful things. 00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:09.000 And to think of yourselves as not only unique characters, 00:27:09.000 --> 00:27:12.000 because everybody is unique. 00:27:12.000 --> 00:27:15.000 But also to think of yourself not only as a me, 00:27:15.000 --> 00:27:16.000 but as a we. 00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:17.000 And that as a we, 00:27:17.000 --> 00:27:20.000 you are part of the village that makes this world 00:27:20.000 --> 00:27:25.000 thrive, survive, and keep going. 00:27:25.000 --> 00:27:28.000 And whatever you do, do it with joy 00:27:28.000 --> 00:27:29.000 and with passion. 00:27:29.000 --> 00:27:32.000 And live long and rich lives. 00:27:32.000 --> 00:27:35.000 Thank you so much for joining us. 00:27:35.000 --> 00:27:36.000 That was great advice. 00:27:36.000 --> 00:27:39.000 And thank you for being such an incredible 00:27:39.000 --> 00:27:41.000 role model for our future generation. 00:27:41.000 --> 00:27:54.000 Music 00:27:54.000 --> 00:27:58.000 This year we celebrate by honoring two representatives 00:27:58.000 --> 00:27:62.000 of the Western Oregon University Class of 1971. 00:28:02.000 --> 00:28:06.000 As Golden Wolves, they represent Western's rich history 00:28:06.000 --> 00:28:10.000 of producing outstanding graduates and esteemed alumni. 00:28:10.000 --> 00:28:14.000 Jan Morgan graduated with a bachelor's degree in education. 00:28:14.000 --> 00:28:17.000 Jan taught English at Whiteaker Junior High 00:28:17.000 --> 00:28:19.000 and North Salem High School. 00:28:19.000 --> 00:28:21.000 She was a district staff trainer 00:28:21.000 --> 00:28:23.000 and moved into administration, 00:28:23.000 --> 00:28:26.000 working as assistant principle at South Salem High School 00:28:26.000 --> 00:28:29.000 and principle at Brush College Elementary School. 00:28:29.000 --> 00:28:32.000 Jan enjoys cooking, reading, and hiking. 00:28:32.000 --> 00:28:35.000 She says, we continue to love Western Oregon 00:28:35.000 --> 00:28:38.000 and stay active with Alumni affairs. 00:28:38.000 --> 00:28:43.000 Gary Martin graduated with a bachelor's degree in music education. 00:28:43.000 --> 00:28:46.000 Gary says that the journey over the past 50 years 00:28:46.000 --> 00:28:49.000 has been interesting and certainly varied... 00:28:49.000 --> 00:28:51.000 Who would have thought that a degree in music education 00:28:51.000 --> 00:28:53.000 would lead to so many different opportunities. 00:28:53.000 --> 00:28:57.000 From playing in the A-F Band during the Vietnam era 00:28:57.000 --> 00:28:61.000 to some amazing sales and marketing jobs in the financial arena. 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:05.000 Gary envoys playing golf and listening to big band jazz. 00:29:05.000 --> 00:29:08.000 In the past few years, Gary has been drawn back to 00:29:08.000 --> 00:29:13.000 WOU and is excited to become a benefactor with the university. 00:29:13.000 --> 00:29:16.000 Western Oregon University congratulates these two 00:29:16.000 --> 00:29:19.000 outstanding alumni and recognizes the rest 00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:24.000 of the class of 1971 as newly inducted Golden Wolves. 00:29:24.000 --> 00:29:38.000 Music 00:29:38.000 --> 00:29:41.000 Greetings, class of 2021. 00:29:41.000 --> 00:29:45.000 Over the past 30-something years my role in the university 00:29:45.000 --> 00:29:48.000 has morphed many times, from undergrad to grad student, 00:29:48.000 --> 00:29:52.000 to professor, and now dean. 00:29:52.000 --> 00:29:54.000 Yet one constant has been my favorite day of the academic year: 00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:56.000 graduation day. 00:29:56.000 --> 00:29:58.000 That's because I am a complete nerd. 00:29:58.000 --> 00:29:60.000 I love the ceremony and pageantry, 00:30:00.000 --> 00:30:02.000 including this weird outfit. 00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:06.000 Most of all, I love the joy and pride that are in the air on this day. 00:30:06.000 --> 00:30:08.000 I missed all that last year. 00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:10.000 And although this year is somewhat better, 00:30:10.000 --> 00:30:13.000 it still isn't the graduation we'd hoped for. 00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:15.000 It is disappointing, 00:30:15.000 --> 00:30:18.000 yet nothing should take away your sense of pride and joy today. 00:30:18.000 --> 00:30:22.000 If anything, graduating during a time like this speaks even more highly 00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:26.000 of you and your ability to succeed despite challenges. 00:30:26.000 --> 00:30:30.000 Last year I told our graduates that if you ever wonder 00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:32.000 how to get through a difficult time, 00:30:32.000 --> 00:30:36.000 just look back on your own life and realize: you already know how. 00:30:36.000 --> 00:30:38.000 Remember your first day at college, 00:30:38.000 --> 00:30:42.000 when "four years from now" seemed too far away to be real? 00:30:42.000 --> 00:30:45.000 Today, your freshman year feels like a blur. 00:30:45.000 --> 00:30:49.000 Life is like that; every tough situation feels like forever while you're in it, 00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:53.000 but the day comes when it's a blip on the rearview mirror of life. 00:30:53.000 --> 00:30:56.000 The old saying, this too shall pass, is not a cliche: 00:30:56.000 --> 00:30:58.000 this too shall pass. 00:30:58.000 --> 00:30:61.000 Today you can take pride in knowing that you've succeeded 00:31:01.000 --> 00:31:03.000 in spite of all the strikes against you. 00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:07.000 This gives you the confidence you will need going forward. 00:31:07.000 --> 00:31:09.000 The man crises we have experienced recently 00:31:09.000 --> 00:31:12.000 make it clear that we need to make this world better 00:31:12.000 --> 00:31:14.000 in so many ways. 00:31:14.000 --> 00:31:16.000 You will take the knowledge you've gained here 00:31:16.000 --> 00:31:18.000 and the persistence you've developed here, 00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:21.000 and you will help to create that better world. 00:31:21.000 --> 00:31:24.000 Here's to the class of 2021. 00:31:24.000 --> 00:31:26.000 Congratulations, graduates! 00:31:26.000 --> 00:31:28.000 My name is Mark Girod and I serve 00:31:28.000 --> 00:31:29.000 as the Dean on the College of Education. 00:31:29.000 --> 00:31:32.000 It pains me deeply that the class of 2021 is being 00:31:32.000 --> 00:31:34.000 robbed of a traditional Commencement 00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:36.000 celebration where we can honor 00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:38.000 each of you with hugs and hand shakes 00:31:38.000 --> 00:31:41.000 and hearty wishes for your future. 00:31:41.000 --> 00:31:44.000 But the last year has been a whirlwind of hard lessons. 00:31:44.000 --> 00:31:48.000 Lessons about justice, compassion and change 00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:50.000 were taught along with lessons about health 00:31:50.000 --> 00:31:52.000 and safety in a global world. 00:31:52.000 --> 00:31:56.000 There is much work yet to do. 00:31:56.000 --> 00:31:58.000 But graduation is a special time 00:31:58.000 --> 00:31:60.000 with friends and family and your professors 00:32:00.000 --> 00:32:03.000 and for this pandemic to have robbed you of this, 00:32:03.000 --> 00:32:05.000 I am sincerely sorry. 00:32:05.000 --> 00:32:07.000 However, life is all about challenges 00:32:07.000 --> 00:32:09.000 and opportunities and being flexible, 00:32:09.000 --> 00:32:12.000 and in that spirit, we will carry forward together! 00:32:12.000 --> 00:32:16.000 Just a couple things from me on this day. 00:32:16.000 --> 00:32:17.000 I want to leave you with a challenge. 00:32:17.000 --> 00:32:20.000 A challenge to live your life in a particular way. 00:32:20.000 --> 00:32:24.000 To live your life according to a code or a set of ideals. 00:32:24.000 --> 00:32:26.000 If you don't already live by a code, 00:32:26.000 --> 00:32:29.000 you can borrow this one. It's a pretty good one. 00:32:29.000 --> 00:32:31.000 To know. 00:32:31.000 --> 00:32:33.000 I challenge you to continue to get smarter about things. 00:32:33.000 --> 00:32:36.000 Graduation is a celebration of your accomplishments 00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:38.000 but you aren't done learning. 00:32:38.000 --> 00:32:40.000 We're never done learning. 00:32:40.000 --> 00:32:44.000 Embrace your nerdy-ness wholeheartedly 00:32:44.000 --> 00:32:48.000 and continue to learn and seek to know. 00:32:48.000 --> 00:32:50.000 Next, to care. 00:32:50.000 --> 00:32:54.000 I challenge you to open your heart and to truly care for others. 00:32:54.000 --> 00:32:57.000 We all know people who choose to shield themselves from caring 00:32:57.000 --> 00:32:59.000 relationships and I encourage you to resist 00:32:59.000 --> 00:32:62.000 the urge to protect yourself in this way. 00:33:02.000 --> 00:33:04.000 Care deeply. 00:33:04.000 --> 00:33:05.000 Love heartily. 00:33:05.000 --> 00:33:08.000 Embarrass your heart and the hearts of others. 00:33:08.000 --> 00:33:10.000 Finally to act. 00:33:10.000 --> 00:33:13.000 I challenge you to act in the world. 00:33:13.000 --> 00:33:15.000 I challenge you to use what you know and to 00:33:15.000 --> 00:33:18.000 demonstrate your care by acting in the world to 00:33:18.000 --> 00:33:20.000 make it a better place. 00:33:20.000 --> 00:33:23.000 To know, to care and to act. 00:33:23.000 --> 00:33:25.000 Like I said, it's a pretty good code. 00:33:25.000 --> 00:33:27.000 If you don't already have one you can use this one. 00:33:27.000 --> 00:33:32.000 Feel free to get it tattooed on your arm, or your neck or wherever. 00:33:32.000 --> 00:33:36.000 In all seriousness, I wish each of you the very best as you go 00:33:36.000 --> 00:33:37.000 out into the world. 00:33:37.000 --> 00:33:40.000 Always remember the road that takes you away from campus 00:33:40.000 --> 00:33:44.000 also leads back here and you will always be a wolf. 00:33:44.000 --> 00:33:47.000 Congratulations. 00:33:47.000 --> 00:33:52.000 Congratulations, class of 2021!
