WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.000 music 00:00:01.000 --> 00:00:05.000 I'm Shelby Moody. I'm a reserve deputy at the Benton County Sheriff's office 00:00:05.000 --> 00:00:08.000 and I'm majoring in criminal justice at Western Oregon University. 00:00:08.000 --> 00:00:11.000 My interest towards becoming a sheriff's deputy started in high school 00:00:11.000 --> 00:00:15.000 actually when I took a forensics class. We focused on crime scenes 00:00:15.000 --> 00:00:20.000 that involved blood spatter, directions of bullet casing, direct blood spatter 00:00:20.000 --> 00:00:24.000 fibers and whatnot. And then I realized the experience that I needed 00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:28.000 to get into a criminal justice degree. So I immediately started 00:00:28.000 --> 00:00:32.000 volunteering and doing as many ride-along hours as I could. 00:00:32.000 --> 00:00:36.000 And then that led me towards WOU for my criminal justice degree. 00:00:36.000 --> 00:00:39.000 Today, I'm a reserve deputy at the Benton County Sheriff's office 00:00:39.000 --> 00:00:43.000 and my job consists of helping the people in the community, riding patrol, 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:50.000 running background checks, leading traffic at football games. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:52.000 My WOU practicum helped me get a job here as a reserve because as an intern 00:00:52.000 --> 00:00:54.000 I really got to become a part of the team here. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.000 I met everyone that worked here because I was with them on patrol 00:00:57.000 --> 00:00:60.000 or I'd see them on Wednesdays when I was here. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:04.000 I also got to take part in training such as CPR and first aid here, 00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:07.000 FEMA and LED which are both needed for a full-time position, 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:10.000 and to have access to the criminal justice system. 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.000 So it's helped me become prepared as a reserve cuz instead of starting with nothing, 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:18.000 I came with a little bit more experience and training. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:21.000 My favorite part of the job so far is riding patrol. 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:25.000 You never get what you expect and everything's alway a surprise. 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:28.000 I met a lot of different kinds of people and learn a lot of backstories. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:32.000 And it's where I find myself most involved with the community. 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:36.000 I would recommend WOU to other students for criminal justice because 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:39.000 they have a hands-on approach. With the practicum, you're forced 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:44.000 to step into the field. It's scary sometimes but you have to make yourself do it. 00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:46.000 And it really shows you and reminds you 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:49.000 what you're passionate about and why you chose WOU. 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:52.000 The thing that makes Western the most special opposed to other universities 00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:56.000 is the professors. They really care about you and your classwork. 00:01:56.000 --> 00:01:60.000 But they also care about your home life and you as a person. 00:02:00.000 --> 00:02:10.000 Music
